  2. Who is a Pet? • The term “pet” can mean different things to different people. • Class defined ideas--- • Kindness, compassion, humane treatment • Pet: A companion, a friend, a living being that shares our life and home

  10. Points to Remember • The Animal Service Center (ASC) is the only shelter in Leon County. If you spot something you believe is cruelty or neglect, please contact the ASC. • Clean water should be provided at all times. • Dog food is for dogs. Cat food is for cats. People food is for people. • Exercise your pet and give him/her attention. • If your dog stays outside he/she needs a dog house.

  15. Mange • Two common types of Mange • Demodex • Scabies • Both have similar symptoms • Both must be treated using prescription medication

Demodex Mange • Caused by a mite • Mite normally occurs on dogs • Not contagious between dogs or to people • Dogs with weakened immune systems are prone to mange • Do not breed dogs that have mange • Several treatment options including medicated dips and oral medications View from the microscope

  19. Roundworms • Worms live in intestines in animals • Causes vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss in animals • When people get the worms travel around the body • Problems caused based on where they go

  20. Hookworms • Worms live in intestines in animals • When people get worms they burrow into the skin

Points to Remember • You must seek veterinary care when needed. • Heartworms are spread by mosquitos and are 100% preventable. • There are two common types of mange. • There are a variety of parasitic worms that can live in your pet’s intestines and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. • Know your pet’s grooming requirements.
