History of marathons • The name comes from the town of Marathon in Greece. • In the first Olimpic marathons was playing at a distance of 40 km. • Michel Bréal, French physiologist, inspiered by the history of race suggested Pierre de Coubertin, turned to run over a distance corresponding to the distance from Marathon to Athens to that of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens.

Olimpian from Barcelona (1992)– he took 7 with time 2.14:32 s. The most important of his achievements is the 4 place at the world championshipsin Tokyo (1991 - 2.15:47s)

Famousmarathonsrunners Name: Gerard Nijboer Age: 60 Town: Hasselt Info: At the Olympic Games in 1980in Moscow Nijboer won the silver medalin the marathon, losing only the defending champion WaldemarCierpinskim of the GDR ( German Democratic Republic). The winnerin this competition at the European Championships in 1982 in Athens. He earned the title of the athlete in the Netherlands in 1982.

  6. Marathons in the Netherlands Eindhoven Maraton- running event playsyearly since 1990 at the traditional distance of 42.195 kilometersin Eindhoven. The first edition of the competition was held in 1959, and from 1961 to 1981 the event does not take place.From 1982 until 1990 competition held every two years.
