  1. Testing and Automation John A Clark Senior Lecturer in Critical Systems University of York

  2. Some Collaborative Work • CONVERSE: EPSRC/MoD funded work York, RR, DERA involving automated test data generation. 1RA, 1RS for 3 years. 12+ papers, various book chapters. • Optimisation based approaches – Nigel Tracey (now Realogy) • Automatic Test Case Generation from Graphical Notations (using Z as an intermediate form). Work by Simon Burton funded by RR. Links in with… • Practical Formal Specifications (MOD-funded) • Certain aspects of tools support likely to be commercialised or otherwise exploited before long.

  3. Some Collaborative Work • Recent DERA funded work at York involving CLAWZ and concurrency – Diyaa Attin • Variety of pieces of work involving tool support for Statecharts (York, BASys – Toyn, via DCSC). • FORTEST: Formal Methods and Testing – an EPSRC supported network (York - DERA). To meet soon. • All papers now on web-site (general V&V, metrics)

  4. Future • Some elements of research directions still to be resolved. But… • Attempts to further state based testing work - grant proposal under way (with Rob Hierons) • Work with DERA, aiming to further exploit the results so far (particularly CONVERSE). Possibly… • Specification synthesis and falsifying aggressively derived specifications. • Maths libraries testing. • Some further recent links with IBM on Object Orientation and testing. • We will do testing work with FPGAs.
