  2. Western and Southern Africa • In West Africa leaders preached about jihad, a holy struggle, to revive and purify Islam. Which lead to the creation of Muslim states, which were built on trade, farming and herding. • Some of the smaller states were controlled by the Asante kingdom. The Asante had limited power and were looking to break free of their overlords. • Islamic people had influenced the Red Sea region in east Africa for quite a long time. • During the early 1800’s Southern Africa was in turmoil because of Shaka. His conquests made people start to migrate and started wars creating chaos throughout almost the entire region.
