PERCEPTION. BY: Jake, Tyler, Megan, and Bryant. MEANING. The process of attaining awareness or understanding of sensory information and the world around us. Perception is the use of all of the senses to interpret sensory information, the brain organizes and understands this information.

  2. MEANING • The process of attaining awareness or understanding of sensory information and the world around us. • Perception is the use of all of the senses to interpret sensory information, the brain organizes and understands this information.

  3. Types of Perception • Subliminal-Stimuli below the threshold of sensation may, in rare circumstances, unconsciously arouse perception • Extrasensory- The alleged phenomenon of perception or awareness of external events in the absence of any sensory stimulation arising from the events.

  4. The Perception Process • Selection • Organization • Interpretation

  5. SELECTION • First stage of perception process. • Select stimuli to which we attend. • Select stimuli through our senses: Smell, Hearing, Seeing, Tasting, Touching.

  6. ORGANIZATION • Second Stage in perception process. • In this stage we mentally arrange stimuli (information) so we can make sense of the information.

  7. INTERPRETATION • Final Stage of perception process. • We attach meaning to stimuli. • Our interpretations are subjective and based on our needs, values, beliefs, and experiences.

  8. FORCED PERSPECTIVE • A technique that employs optical illusion to make an object appear farther away, closer, larger or smaller than it actually is.
