  2. What was it? • One of first laws passed by Compromise of 1850 • Most controversial law • Allowed California to enter as free state, prohibited slave trade in D.C. Sec. 8. And be it further enacted, That the marshals, their deputies, and the clerks of the said District and Territorial Courts, shall be paid, for their services, the like fees as may be allowed for similar services in other cases

  3. Lost Rights • No right to trial by jury. • Couldn’t testify for themselves. • $1,000 fine for anyone who helped a fugitive slave, six months in prison, or both. • Federal commissioners who enforced law were given $10, only given $5 if person was freed

  4. Results of Fugitive Slave Act • Hated by abolitionists, some of which started vigilance committees to send endangered to Canada • Some abolitionists resorted to violence • Nine Northern States passed personal liberty laws • Caused the start of Underground Railroad

  5. Spreading Tensions • Northerners felt like rights were being taken away • South angry because Northerners helping African Americans escape
