  1. American Sign Language FACTS AND FICTION

  2. 1. ASL IS NOT ENGLISH!!! ASL is a unique language with it’s own vocabulary and syntax (word/sign order).

  3. Notice that all languages differ in both vocabulary and syntax. (English) The big brown dog chases the scared cat. (French) Le grand chien marron poursuivrele chat peur. (the big dog brown chases the cat scared) (Spanish) El gran perro marron persigue al gato asustado. (the big dog brown chases the cat scared) ASL is not written. “point right” dog brown large “point left” cat frighten chase

  4. 2. ASL is not just fingerspelling. Any concept you can talk about in English can be signed in ASL. Fingerspelling (using the manual alphabet to spell words) is most often limited to proper names.

  5. 3. NOT ALL SIGNS LOOK LIKE THE CONCEPT THEY REPRESENT. • ASL signs can be divided into 2 categories: • Iconic: signs that do look like the concept they represent (ex. C, O and V) • Arbitrary: signs that do not look like the concept they represent (ex. B, X and F). Most signs are arbitrary.

  6. 4. ASL IS NOT UNIVERSAL. ASL is used mainly in the U.S. and Canada. Other countries have their own sign languages.

  7. 5. ASL IS A VISUAL/GESTURAL LANGUAGE • Visual (use your eyes to receive information). • Gestural (use your hands to relay information). DUH! But it is important to understand this idea because we will be processing language in a different part of the brain…

  8. 6. ASL IS NOT WRITTEN/READ You will translate ASL into spoken or written English.

  9. 7. ASL IS NOT SPOKEN “Mouthing” signs is done minimally. Talking while signing changes the syntax of ASL and also changes the area of language processing in the brain. SSSHHH!

  10. 8. ASL IS A LIVING LANGUAGE ASL, like English, has changed over time and is still used everyday.
