  1. LOS MANDATOS INFORMALES “Tú” commands

  2. The command form is used when asking or directing someone to do something (Pass the essay in on Monday/ Please close the window). In Spanish, there are formal and informal command forms depending on whether the person is normally addressed as “Ud. or “tú”. (There are also plural forms for “Uds.” and “vosotros”)

  3. Affirmative “tú” or “informal” commands have the same form as the third-person singular of the present tense of the verb.

  4. echar él echa ¡Echa! prender ella prende ¡Prende! batir Ud. bate ¡Bate! hervir él hierve ¡Hierve! tostar ella tuesta ¡Tuesta! repetir Ud. repite ¡Repite!

  5. Negative “tú” commands are formed using thestem of the first-person singular. If the verb is an -ar verb, add -es to the stem: echar yo echo ech- ¡No eches! tostar yo tuesto tuest- ¡No tuestes!

  6. Negative -er and -ir commands are formed by adding -as to the stem: prender yo prendo prend- ¡No prendas! batir yo bato bat- ¡No batas! hervir yo hiervo hierv- ¡No hiervas! repetir yo repito repit- ¡No repitas!

  7. A number of common verbs have irregular affirmative commands: Decir ¡Di! ¡No digas! Hacer ¡Haz! ¡No hagas! Poner ¡Pon! ¡No pongas! Salir ¡Sal! ¡No salgas! Tener ¡Ten! ¡No tengas! Venir ¡Ven! ¡No vengas!

  8. Two verbs have irregular forms for both the affirmative and the negative commands: Ir ¡Ve! ¡No vayas! Ser ¡Sé! ¡No seas!
