  1. The Placement of Stents Associated with Vascular Access ASDIN Coding University

Codes Are Generic • The codes for stents are generic and not specific for arterial or venous anatomy except in the lower extremity • In the lower extremity, arterial stent placement is covered under the Lower Extremity Revascularization coding system (See unit on Lower Extremity Revascularization Coding for more details)

  3. Code for 1st Stent Placed • The code for stent placement is 37205 • Descriptor – transcatheter placement of an intravascular stent(s), (non-coronary vessel), percutaneous; initial vessel. • The code 75960 is used for RS&I • Descriptor - transcatheter placement of an intravascular stent, (non-coronary vessel), percutaneous and/or open, radiological supervision and interpretation, each vessel

  4. Coding Subsequent Stents • If a second stent is placed, its code is + 37206 • This same code is used for all subsequent stent placements performed during that session • This is an add-on code and therefore must be listed in addition to the code for the primary procedure (37205) preceding it • The same RS&I code (75960) is used with this and subsequent additional stent codes

  5. Multiple Stenting Principles • The principles governing multiple angioplasties apply to the placement of multiple stents • Only a single stent code can be recorded within the access as defined for therapeutic purposes, or within the central veins • A central venous stent can be coded in addition to one in the access (the add-on code would be used)

  6. More Principles • The angioplasty rule relating to arterial and venous treatments performed on the same case does not apply here because the stent codes are not unique • A maximum of 2 stent codes can be recorded for treating lesions associated with the access • Arterial lesions proximal to the access are coded separately – one for each separately named artery • Arterial lesions in the lower extremity must use the Lower Extremity Coding system (See unit on Lower Extremity Revascularization Coding for more details)
