Prevention & Education in Schools The Grace Smith House Violence Prevention and Education Program works to eliminate relationship violence in Dutchess County by facilitating workshop and groups for students, parents, and service providers. In these workshops we give community members the tools and language to engage in healthy relationships. Topics include: dating violence, safety planning, (Cyber) bullying, gender roles, and healthy friendships. Prevention and Education Curriculum: • Evidence-based curriculum: Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) • 13 school districts in Duchess County (middle schools and high schools) Engaging Workshops on: • Bullying & Cyber Bullying • Internet safety • Teen Dating Violence

  4. Cyber Bullying Cyber Bullying- When one person targets another person or group in a harmful way, through the use of technology. Three Characteristics: • Deliberate: A bully’s intention is to hurt. • Repeated: A bully targets a victim again and again. • Power Imbalance: The bully perceivesthey have power and control over the victim.

  5. Three Devices used in Cyberbullying • Cell phone • Computer (including Tablets, iPods, iPads, etc..) • Video Gaming Systems (including PS4, Xbox, Switch, etc..)

Top 3 Social Media Sites- Snapchat* • Post photos/ videos to a 24 hr. replaying story. • Send photos/ videos/ call privately to friends. • Put a timer on photos and videos to disappear after being opened. • Snapmap • Message/ chat with friends. • Gain streaks for posting. • Use unique filters on photos and videos (including location). • Post comments under photos/videos. *For ages 13 and up- Rated for Teens in app store

  10. Snap Map- Ghost Mode • This mode prevents your location from showing up at all anymore. • Friends cannot see your location. • Ghost mode removes your last known location on the map. • Snap Map is automatically on. You need to set Ghost mode if your location service is on.

  11. Snap Chat Update • Chat section- press and hold friends name. If their location is on, their location will pop up without needing to go into the map. • It will state how long ago that person was in their location. i.e.- 24m ago in Poughkeepsie, New York.

  12. Snap Chat- • Selfie or videos sent disappear after set timer. • Those photos/videos go to two places- snap chat & the service provider. • They can be brought back- safety net.

Top 3 Social Media Site-Instagram* • Post photos and videos to profile. • Use hash tags to describe photo. • Follow other instagram accounts. • Post comments under photo/ videos. • Have a profile photo. • Information about oneself posted in a “Bio”. • Privately chat with friends and other account users. • Can like others photos and videos. *For ages 13 and up- Rated for Teens in app store

  15. Instagram-Show Activity Status • “Show Activity Status” is automatically on. • This shows when you were last using Instagram. • If you click “Show Activity Status off”, you cannot see others’ activity status.

  16. Instagram-Hash-tags • Hash-tags are public. • Any photo or video that is hash-tagged becomes available for anyone to see, whether they follow you or not.

Inappropriate Usage of Phone & Social Media • Sexting - Sending nude photos or videos through the use of social media or cell phone. • *age of consent for NYS is 17 years old. • If a person sends, receives, or distributes (this includes showing from their cell phone) a photo(s) or video(s) of someone who is nude and under the age of 17 years old, it is child pornography. Even if it’s shared between children of the same age. • Charges can and will include being arrested, put on house arrest, and registry as a sex offender. • It is illegal even if the child gave permission for content to be taken or distributed.

Inappropriate Usage of Phone & Social Media • What to do next? • Student • If a student receives a photo or video of someone nude and under the age of 17 years old, the student needs to find a trusted adult (18 years or older). • The student needs to tell the adult they did not ask for the photo, they do not want it, and show that they are deleting the photo in the adults presence. • If an investigation occurs regarding who has seen, received, or sent the nude content, the trusted adult with be the students witness and testimony that the content was deleted and had not been asked for. • Parent/Teacher • No Judgment. • Have them delete the photo. • Explain why it is important for the content to be deleted and the importance of not engaging in sexting. • Notifying the school in case the content is distributed throughout the school or the victim begins to be bullied. • Talk about being safe on the internet.

  20. Why Do Young People Sext? • Young people sext for many different reasons: • Joining in because ‘everyone is doing it’ • Boosting self-esteem • Flirting with others and testing their sexual identity • Exploring their sexual feelings • To get attention and connect with new people on social media • They may find it difficult to say no if somebody asks them for an explicit image, especially if the person asking is persistent (peer pressure)

How to talk to Students about Cyber Bullying and Internet Safety 71 % of teens are concerned about cyber bullying.  Bullying using texting or social media is becoming more common – don’t let your discomfort stop you from asking the questions. • All You Have To Do is Ask • Any Time Your Student Wants To Talk To You, Drop Everything And Pay Attention • How Do You Know Your Student Wants to Talk to You? • He/she hangs around you but might not say anything. • He/she says they don’t feel well but nothing seems to be physically wrong. • He/she tries to get you alone-i.e. might want to accompany you to the grocery store. • He/she says they want to talk but that it’s ‘no big deal’ or ‘it’s about a friend’.
