The Tim Peake Exhibition Cardiff 28 th November 2018.

Major Timothy Nigel Peake CMG is a British Army Air Corps officer, European Space Agency astronaut and a former International Space Station crew member. Peake has become the first British or UK-born person to fly into space without a private contract. Tim Peake is a firm believer in STEM based projects for learning. He has stated on Twitter – Tim Peake @astro_timpeake #STEM skills are not only vital to our future growth and prosperity but open the door to exciting & rewarding careers. On 28th November 2018, the children in years 5 and 9 of Tonyrefail Community School had the opportunity to experience these activities for themselves when they attended an exhibition at Cardiff Museum. They had a BLAST!!!
This is the capsule that brought Tim Peake back to Earth from the International Space Station. His actual space suite is part of the exhibition in Cardiff Museum which years 5 and 9 visited. The Soyuz TMA-19M space capsule This looked very much like the head of the Iron Man!
It was great to know how it feels to wear a space suit but I wouldn’t like to wear it for a long time. I was concerned about how they move around in it as it is so worm, big and awkward also it was pretty funny in the space suit because it felt like I couldn’t move at all because it felt like abundance of Teddy’s and pillows . It was uncomfortable because you can’t eat in it and I couldn’t work out how anyone wearing the suit could go to the toilet. By Kayden Jones One of the first things I did was put on a space uniform. It was rather big and I couldn’t quite fit into it properly. I did manage to get my hands into the gloves, but they where big. I really enjoyed the experience. The space suit was massive on me and I had to stretch to get my head through the visor. By Sian Williams I’m definitely too little to be in this suit but I like it. Sophie Rees The space suit was great fun really hot .i loved waving my arms around in it by Lowri Richards.
It was really hard to see what parted fitted where but we managed to do it when we all worked together. We had to try and build a space rocket using Lego.
We had to imagine that we were working with the space gloves on and how difficult it would be to pick something up, make something or move something. In this activity we had to find a way of using certain materials to make something strong enough to hold a weight much greater than itself. We had to work together to make a detailed picture of the moon.
If the material turned colour like this then it wasn’t very good at keeping infer red light out. As a team we had to test the materials that could be used to make a space suit. We had to use infer read lights to see the effects that could be caused in space.
We had to judge the colours created by the infer red light on a colour gage. The brighter the colour the least effective the material against infer red light.
In this picture I was using 2 different materials to see which one absorbed water the best out of cotton and fake snow. We had to measure 100g of each. My favourite was the snow. By working as a team, we were able to test all of the materials. We had to be precise with the amount of water we used to test the absorbency of materials so that we could work out the best materials to use.
Mrs Lancet helped us to do part of the experiment with the material that makes snow. It was great to see it just grown and grow. We tested all the materials for absorbency. We even found out how astronauts went to the toilet in space and why they wear nappies.
It was a great day. We all learned something new. We all got to play, learn and enjoy. The learning was fun and very hand on.
