Explorations • He was famous for being the first European to explore Florida and name it. • In 1536 de Soto returned to Spain from a and he was rich and famous, but he wanted more • King Charles appointed de Soto as governor of Florida and Cuba and de Soto got to explore and conquer Florida for Spain • He had eight long voyages • His wife ruled Cuba and he ruled Florida

Interesting Facts • He conquered Florida for Spain • In 1542 he fell ill and died • In 1541 de Soto and his men were the first Europeans to see the Mississippi River • He searched for the fountain of youth and never fond it • Along there travels many men died of sickness, in attacks, and from insect and snake bites • He killed the leader of the Incas and ruled the empire

  5. Died • He died on May 21, 1542 (age 46 years old) • He died in Arkansas • He died of ill and his aide of death buried him in the river to keep his death a secret from the natives
