  1. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Program title: Developing sustainable surveillance and response for seasonal and avian influenza. Goal: To establish a comprehensive epidemiologic and virologic surveillance system for influenza that can identify and respond to seasonal and avian influenza in a timely manner. Outcomes: • Harmonization and strengthening of routine influenza-related surveillance systems in a target area (province). • Harmonization of influenza-related surveillance output at the central level. • Assessing disease burden of influenza (East Jakarta Project) • Strengthening laboratory-based surveillance through the influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) sentinel systems.

  2. To improve the quality of data generated by the ILI and SARI laboratory based surveillance systems. To improve the quality of data generated by EWARS. To improve quality of data of pneumonia surveillance. To build laboratory capacity in ILI network laboratories to respond to alerts signaling a potential outbreak of influenza. To establish mechanism to share information generated by the different influenza-related surveillance systems. 1-3: Surveillance & Information systems 4: Laboratory development & diagnostics 5: Sub National Outcome 1: Harmonization and strengthening of routine influenza-related surveillance systems in a target area (province).

Outcome 3: Assessing disease burden of influenza (East Jakarta Project) • Surveillance & Information systems • Policy and strategy • Disease control • To intensify disease surveillance (daily testing & monthly monitoring) to generate high quality data on influenza activity. • To understand disease burden of influenza in the district to inform treatment and prevention strategies.

East Jakarta Project • Surveillance conducted daily in 6 sentinel hospitals & weekdays in 4 sentinel health centers. • Using WHO case definitions for Influenza Like Illnes (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). • Nasal and throat swabs collected from all ILI and SARI patients. • All samples tested for influenza by RT-PCR daily • Laboratories: RS. Sulianti Saroso, Provincial Laboratory of DKI Jakarta, and NIHRD Laboratory as national referral laboratory. • Specimens positive for influenza A are subtyped • Seasonal influenza subtypes (H1 seasonal, H1N1-2009, H3). • Avian H5. • Data Collection: • Interview using ILI and SARI Case Forms. • Data reporting using online system – a designated web for East Jakarta Surveillance. 5

  6. Outcome 4: Strengthening lab-based surveillance through ILI and SARI sentinel systems • Laboratory development & diagnostics • To monitor sentinel surveillance system sites, encourage feedback and coordination of activities in the laboratory network for influenza.
