  1. BELL WORK Solve the following equations for x. 3x + 5 = 4x + 2 5x + 15 = 25 x = 3 x = 2

  2. HANDS ON EQUATIONS

  3. REMEMBER… Your scale must stay balanced. Whatever you do on one side, you must do the same thing on the other. The first thing we want to do is get all of the pawns (variables) on one side and all of the number cubes (constants) on the other. Remember to check your work.

  4. PRACTICE SHEET #3 Is everything with a variable on one side and everything without a variable on the other? Our first step is to subtract 3x from both sides. This gets all variables on side of the equal sign. x = 7 Go back and check your work. Plug in 7 for each pawn. 3 (7) + 7 = 4 (7) 28 = 28

  5. PRACTICE SHEET #3 Are all like terms combined on each side? Combine everything with a variable on the left side of the equal sign/scale. 3x + 2 = x + 10 Now solve as normal. x = 4 Go back and check your work. Plug in 4 for each pawn. 4 + 2 + 2(4) = 4 + 10 14 = 14

  6. PRACTICE SHEET #3 First Step: Combine like terms on both sides of the equal sign. 4x = 2x + 10 Take 2x away from each side. 2x = 10 Divide both sides by 2. x = 5 Go back and check your work. Plug in 5 for each pawn. 5 + 3(5) = 5 + 5 + 10 5 + 15 = 20 20 = 20

  7. PRACTICE SHEET #3 Try this one on your own. Don’t forget to check your answer.

  8. PRACTICE SHEET #3 Remember to keep your scales balanced and only do legal moves. How would you write this as an equation? 2x = 12 Divide each side by 2 x = 6 Go back and check your work. Plug in 6 for each pawn. 2(6)= 10 + 2 12 = 12

  9. PRACTICE SHEET #3 How would we write this equation? 4x = 20 Divide both sides by 4 x = 5 Go back and check your work. Plug in 5 for each pawn. 4 (5)= 10 + 10 20 = 20

  10. PRACTICE SHEET #3 How would we write this as an equation? x + 1 + 2x = x + 5 Combine like terms on each side of the equal sign. 3x + 1 = x + 5 Subtract x from each side. 2x + 1 = 5 x = 2 Go back and check your work. Plug in 2 for each pawn. 2 + 1 + 2(2) = 2 + 5 3 + 4 = 7 7 = 7

  11. PRACTICE SHEET #3 Take 2 away from each side. 2x = x +3 What’s next? Subtract x from each side. x = 3 Go back and check your work. Plug in 3 for each pawn. 2(3) + 2 = 3 + 5 6 + 2 = 8 8 = 8

  12. PRACTICE SHEET #3 You try #9 and 10 on your own. Remember to check your answer!!
