Objectives of the project • INVESTMENT : to improve the knowledge of the need for investment in water and sanitation in Europe, by trying to define principles that could lead to a method of investment evaluation at a European level • FINANCING : to study future appropriate strategies concerning the financing of water investments and the opportunities to develop Public Private Partnerships • PRICE : to analyse and to anticipate the consequences of the financing strategies on water pricing in the short, middle and long run.

  4. Project Structure • Project duration : 18 months • Initialisation Phase : stakeholders mobilisation, structural data production and data basis organisation (6 months) • Thematic Analysis : investment, financing, price (6 months) • Valorisation and Dissemination (6 months)

  6. Main expected results Investment - Financing - Price • Common principles to evaluate investment needs in water and sanitation in Europe • Prospective scenarios on financing strategies that can be implemented • Analysis of the consequences on water price in Europe

Main expected results Investment • Databases about the institutional background, key elements of the water economy, and the need for investment in water in Europe • Elements to modelling the needs for investment • A typology of territories regarding the needs for investment and the financing strategies

  8. Main expected results Financing • Assessment of the room for manœuvre of the States: financial strategies and decision scheme • Analytic tools on the capacity to attract investors • Innovative models of cooperation between the Public and the Private sectors

  9. Main expected results Price • Influence of the funding origins in water pricing • Analytic tools on the implementation of WFD principles

Main expected results MEIF will highlight: • The links between investment needs, financing strategies and the price of water • The strengths and weaknesses of European Union members and Pre-accession Countries about current situations With the mobilisation of the stakeholders involved in the project, MEIF will open the way of future developments for : • Effective and homogeneous methods and principles in Europe • Prospective scenarios and tools to implement the Water Framework Directive
