  1. Cone Gatherers – from ch6

  2. Chapter 6 What was Calum’s reaction when he saw the deer? What does this highlight to the reader? • • What was Calum’s reaction when the deer was shot? • • What did Duror do? Summarise the action together with his confusion. What does this suggest to the reader?

  3. • What link does Duror make between his life and • Calum’s physicality? • • Why was Duror so miserable when he realised his wife • was not actually dead? • • Who did Lady RC assume his anger was aimed at? • • When Lady RC told Tulloch to get rid of Calum and • Neil, Roderick spoke up for them. What did he say? • How does this episode highlight both of our key themes?

  4. Ch7 • How does Neil feel about the episode and the • situation the brothers found themselves in? • What do his feelings link to the external setting? • How does the final action of chapter 7 - • Roderick’s greeting - contradict the expectations • of the class system?

  5. Neil’s feelings: angry/humiliated… • Setting – hadn’t appreciated that war had any impact on them – they were not Jews being “dragged to the concentration camp” BUT • “it was necessary now for him to fight back against every injustice inflicted on him, and especially on his brother.”

  6. Roderick’s greeting = pleasant/surprised LRC • Neil’s reaction = surprised/embarrassed that he had been noticed. His assumption was “they’ll not even notice us.”

  7. Ch 10 – the opening pages • What do we learn of Lady RC’s views towards: • Peggy • Her husband • In what way can this link to our theme of expectations of class versus religion?

  8. LRC’s view of Peggy: • Felt she should go to visit/a ‘good’ thing to do • Disgusted by Peggy: • “it had taken all LRC’s self control…not to shudder and show disgust” • Always grateful of her ability to walk/her mobility when she left

  9. LRC’s view of her husband, Colin • He believed in God, and in Heaven – but his Heaven had a degree of rank as on earth. • Her husband regarded Roderick’s “puny” physicality and “backward in mind” as “proof that the marriage had been a misalliance.” • Her husband viewed being kind to “inferiors” as “disastrous.”

  10. Ch 10 • Why was Roderick bringing the brothers a cake? • How does the setting reflect the young boy’s • fear? Give examples to support your answer. • How can Roderick be seen as a very mature boy? Reference his thoughts about Duror. • What did Roderick do with his cake? Why do you think this was?

  11. Ch 10 • Roderick brought a “cake of friendship”. • Setting – upon seeing Duror notice the darker descriptions. “evil presence.” • Why did he leave the cake? Weakness/an acknowledgement that he could not succeed.

  12. Ch 11 and 12 – Key incident 2 – The Beach Hut * Summarise the key points of action. • HOW is class highlighted through details of • ch11? (consider the broken dolls/the • expectation that the brothers would leave/the • uncharitable approach from Lady RC that defies • her Christian values) • HOW is Roderick used to highlight his mother’s • faults? • In Ch12, how does Neil’s discussion with Mr Tulloch display his bitterness. What does he not understand about the class system?
