  2. Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum All Forum members are volunteers from your local community who are enthusiastic about helping patients and members of the public influence the way that local healthcare is organised and delivered.

  3. Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum The Forum is supported by Southend Association of Voluntary Services (SAVS)

  4. Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum • The Southend PCT Forum gives local patients and the public a chance to influence all decisions affecting the health services provided by the Southend-on-Sea Primary Care Trust. • The Forum’s role is to monitor and review the services provided by and commissioned by the Southend Primary Care Trust.

Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum • The Forum has 8 members who have excellent links with the local community • The Forum meets each month to • review its work plans • report on progress of investigations and implementation of recommendations • be briefed about local health issues • agree responses to NHS consultations • be briefed about administrative issues • Members have different interests and capabilities • Forum members are team players

Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum Southend-on-Sea Primary Care Trust serves our community in partnership with : • 40 Doctor’s (GP) Surgeries (Practices) • 97 GPs • 25 Dental Practices • 26 dentists providing NHS treatment (to some extent) • 40 Pharmacies • 24 Opticians • 63 Optometrists • 9 Clinics/Health Centres • Wheelchair service • 4 District Nurse bases • Approximately 350 people • Health visitors • School nursing • Children’s services • District nursing (in partnership with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council)

Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum Southend-on-Sea Primary Care Trust Commissions • Mental Health and Learning Disabilities services (£23million 2003) • All Hospital Provision for our community via: - Southend Hospital - Basildon Hospital - other hospitals • Specialist commissioning services, such as Guys, Barts and Ormond Street • Child and adolescent Mental Health Services, Adult Mental Health and Learning Disability Services • Health Promotion and Improvement throughout Southend-on-Sea

Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum THE ROLE AND POWERS OF THE FORUM: • To obtain the views and experiences of patients, users and carers about the services provided in our area • Make reports and recommendations to the PCT about those services based on the views and information provided by the patients and public of Southend-on-Sea. • Promote the involvement of the public in consultations and policies of the PCT, the Strategic Health Authority and any other public bodies whose decisions affect the health of the public in our area • In partnership with local providers the forum is able to inspect premises owned or controlled by the PCT and Local Authorities relating to health services. • Help every level of planning and decision making in connection with the delivery of local health services

Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum Achievements in 2005/2006 • General Practice • Reported to the PCT that the public were having difficulty in getting on GP lists.The PCT recruited additional GPs • Access to GPs. Reported the problems of getting appointments. The PCT worked with GPs to improve access • Attitude of some GP staff. Explained the problem to the PCT and training provided for receptionists

Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum Achievements in 2005/2006 • Access to dentists • Recommend to members of the public the action they should take • Review findings with PCT • Action taken: PCT recruited additional dentists • New dental contract • Informed PCT of implementation problems • Action taken: PCT provided dentists with publicity material

Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum Achievements in 2005/2006 • Provision of digital hearing aids • Action taken • Gathered data re delays in provision • Informed PCT of the problems • PCT and hospital acted • Operational problems with hearing aids • Action taken • Informed the PCT re problems and demonstrated problems

Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum Achievements in 2005/2006 • Cancer Diagnosis Members of the public had reported to Forum members that they were not satisfied with the quality of diagnosis in primary care. Members conducted interviews with cancer patients and carers about their experiences of diagnosis, subsequent treatment and social care. Results presented to the PCT, Director of Public Health, Cancer Network Board and Southend Hospital. All NHS organisations accepted findings and are attempting to improve the patient and carer experience

  13. Southend-on-Sea PPI Forum Achievements in 2005/2006 • Toe nail cutting service • Your Health, Your Care, Your Say • Assisted various NHS Boards as Board members • Involved with consultations by the Strategic Health Authority • Cumberlege Intermediate Care Centre Visit • Etc.
