What Is Assistive Technology? • Assistive technology can be described as any piece of equipment, item, or system, whether it’s bought, created or modified, that is used to help, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities.(Blackhurst, 2006) (Assistive Technology, 2015)

Laws Regarding Assistive Technology • Assistive Technology Act of 1998 - The Assistive Technology Act establishes a grant program, administered by the U.S. Department of Education, to provide Federal funds to support State programs that address the assistive technology needs of individuals with disabilities. ("Assistive Technology: Federal Law and Regulations," 2012) • Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 - Section 255 of the requires manufacturers of telecommunications equipment and providers of telecommunications services to ensure that such equipment and services are accessible to persons with disabilities, if readily achievable. The Federal Communications Commission's Report and Order Implementing Section 255 was released in September 1999. ("Assistive Technology: Federal Law and Regulations," 2012) • Section 505 of the Rehabilitation Act - Section 505 establishes the enforcement procedures for title V of the Rehabilitation Act. Section 505 (a) (1) provides that the procedures and rights set forth in Section 717 of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 shall be available with respect to any complaint under Section 501. Section 505 (a)(2) provides that the remedies, rights and procedures set forth in title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 shall be available to any person alleging a violation of Section 504. Section 508 is also enforced through the procedures established in Section 505 (a)(2). ("Assistive Technology: Federal Law and Regulations," 2012) • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - Prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation. The ADA requires that reasonable accommodations be provided in meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities. Additional technical assistance regarding the ADA is available through the ADA Technical Assistance Program. ("Assistive Technology: Federal Law and Regulations," 2012)

  5. Description of Assistive Technology: Hearing Impaired W-Talker: is a electronic device designed for hearing impaired children who have difficulty speaking effectively. (W-Talker, 2015) Large FM/tour systems and IR systems: help make convention halls, courtrooms, museums, theaters, places of worship and other public spaces accessible to people with a hearing loss. (Infrared System, 2015) Closed Caption: assist people with hearing problem by displaying dialogue for programs that are captioned. (TV Caption, 2015)

  6. Description of Assistive Technology: Seeing Impaired Magnifiers: designed for reading fine print in books, maps, and documents. Braille n’ Speak: performs numerous of functions. This device have the ability to save word processing file, it functions as a spell checker, clock, calendar and calculator. ("AT Lab :: Classroom Devices :: Blindness & Visual Impairments," 2008)

  7. Description of Assistive Technology: Learning Disability Coin-U-Lator: uses realistic money bill and coin buttons to count money or teach the value of different coins. Children can practice addition and subtraction with coin denominations. ("AT Lab :: Classroom Devices :: Learning Disabilities: Math," 2008) Co:Writer 4000 : is the talking word prediction software which enables students to express their thoughts in writing with less frustration. ("AT Lab :: Classroom Devices :: Learning Disabilities: Writing," 2008)

  8. Description of Assistive Technology: Physically Disabled Alternate keyboards: Alternate keyboards and pointing systems that change how a software program is used. The photo shows an IntelliKeys keyboard (IntelliTools, Inc.) with a modified overlay which makes learning more direct for a student with a disability. S/he simply needs to press a picture key to see the word spelled on the screen or to spell it out with larger letter keys. Page Turner: By using this device to hold a book for a student, s/he is then freed to focus on reading & comprehending the material in the book. A page turns when the students presses a switch.
