What is sex segregation in sports? • Sex segregation is the process of separating the sexes from playing in the same league. • Having separate male and female leagues. • Changing rules in men’s and women’s leagues. • Not allowing women or men to play in the opposite sex’s sporting activities. • Having different equipment • Justine Blainey (1st Example)

Reasons given for and against sex segregation Against • Different shapes, sizes and skills • Elite Skill Level players not getting the opportunity to improve/challenge themselves • Funding/ Lack of Leagues For • Biological and Physiological Differences • Skill Levels • “Safety”- Western ideals of women being fragile • Better development of leagues (not losing players). More funding

  7. Keeling’s Issue • Denied to play because of skill • Discrimination? • No boys league

Hayley Wickenheiser • Considered one of the greatest female hockey players to ever play. • Started playing hockey for Canada at the age of 15 and has played ever since.(1995) • Over 41 international games (31 g, 37a 68pts) • Played for the Calgary Dinos in the 2011-2012 season. (MVP) • Invited to two Philadelphia Flyers rookie camps. (1998 & 1999) • Played in a men’s professional league (2002-2004, 2008-2009) • First female hockey player to get a point in a men’s professional league.

  10. Personal Opinions • If the skill level is there allow it • Double standard • Age/size (Physical Contact) • Other players and league officials • Equivalents (Own league first tryout for other) • Lack of funding and leagues

  11. Discussion • Should women be allowed to participate in men’s leagues and vice versa? • Is there a certain age group where it is and is not acceptable? • Will there be an end to sex segregation in sports? (Professional Men’s, Women’ and Co-Ed leagues)
