  2. What was the Hundred Years’ War? • England went to war with France due to conflicts with the throne. • The last Capetian king died without a successor. • Edward III of England believed the throne should be his <--- this started the war.

  3. When was it? • The war continued on and off from 1337 to 1453. Victories passed back and forth between the two nations.

  4. Who won? • France eventually drove the English out in 1453 except for the city of Calais.

  5. Effects of the War • Change in the style of warfare in Europe • English introduced the longbow • Europe went from fighting with knights on horseback and chivalry to longbows more hands on fighting. • Battle of Crecy-First battle for the English using the longbow • More than 1/3 french died in battle

  6. Effects of the War • Feelings of Nationalism emerged in England and France • King is national leader • You fight for your king and country, not your feudal lord. • Power and prestige of french monarch increased
