  4. Reasoning Questions • How does the culture of the author have an effect on his point of view? Give evidence from the poem. • What inferences can you make about the narrator’s opinions about reading and books? What evidence supports your inferences? • What assumptions can you make about the narrator, the librarian, and the grandparents based on the feelings inspired by the poem?

  5. Connection with Art • What aspects of the Aztec culture are portrayed in this picture? • What are some of the different ways people have used over the centuries to record their individual and cultural memories? • How are these reflected in the pictures?

  6. Response Journal • Why was it important to the speaker to show his grandparents how he had painted the Aztec warrior? • How else did his cultural background affect what he wrote in the poem?
