  1. What is a Disability and the Need for Support Care

  2. Why is there a need for large scale and massive support care services for the disabled? The reason is simple – though this aspect rarely comes into focus the world over, the problem is huge globally, to say the least.

  3. Here are some statistics to prove this point. · Around 110 million to 190 million adults have disabilities in some form that restricts their functioning. · Over a billion people constituting 15% of the world’s population have some form of disability. · The rates of disability are increasing exponentially as the present population age and chronic health issues come to the surface. · Those with disabilities have difficulties accessing healthcare services and thus suffer from various health issues.

  4. All these factors go a long way to underscore the importance of disability support care. The focus of specialized agencies offering disability care is home-based care so that the disabled can be comfortable in familiar surroundings while being looked after. This type of supportive care is comprehensive. It includes all who are disabled with limited functional capabilities, not necessarily afflicted with mental or physical issues at a young age, but also those who have aged and need help in daily life.

  5. Disability is a very broad term and people with disabilities have common healthcare needs just like anybody else and thus should have access to the usual healthcare services. It is laid down in Article 25 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) that it is the right of persons with disabilities to get the best of healthcare without discrimination. Disability support careservices are not only for those who are disabled due to intellectual or psychiatric problems but also those with physical restrictions too. The latter consists of two components. The first is people who are restricted in their movements due to accident or injury and might be of any age. The second is the aged who have become physically weak to an extent that their mobility is severely hampered. Since they are mentally alert but physically weak, it is all the more critical that they get the best of disability support care. For the aged with a disability, Governments provide attractive financial packages to help them live a comfortable life with necessary care and support. The same packages hold good for younger people too who suffer from specific ailments like dementia or other physical limitations that require constant care from a trained and experienced staff of external agencies. Before selecting a disability support careprovider it is first necessary to evaluate the extent of help required. For the aged, it might be assistance with domestic chores like cleaning, cooking, or doing the laundry. For the very feeble and the aged, assistance in personal care like showering and mobility help might be required. Once this is known, the right disability support care provider can be selected.
