  3. Roman 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to {His} purpose. (NAS)

  4. Roman 8:28 “We know” is oi\da (oida) certain knowledge absolute understanding “We have come to know with certainty.” • This knowledge only comes by living, by experiencing the knowledge you have learned and understood. • Application of truth in your life.

  5. All Things Work Together . . . • It was BAD that Jacob favored his son Joseph. • It was BAD that Joseph’s brothers hated him. • It was BAD that they threw him in the pit. • It was BAD that they sold him to the Ishmaelites. • It was BAD that he was taken to Egypt in slavery. • It was BAD that after working his way into a position of authority he was thrown into prison for a crime he did not commit

  6. All Things Work Together . . . “What if Joseph should bear a grudge against us and pay us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!” Genesis 50:15 “Do not be afraid,” he told them, “for am I in God’s place? And as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” Genesis 50:19-20 6

  7. Roman 8:28 “We know” is oi\da (oida) certain knowledge absolute understanding “Good” is ajgaqov" (agathos) absolute good ultimate good John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me.”

  8. Roman 8:28 “We know” is oi\da (oida) certain knowledge absolute understanding “Good” is ajgaqov" (agathos) absolute good ultimate good “Love” is ajgapavw (agapao) a constant, habitual action John 13:17 “If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.” John 14:15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

  9. Roman 8:28 What was the call? An invitation to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. To whom has the call gone out? To the whole world. “We know” is oi\da (oida) certain knowledge absolute understanding “Good” is ajgaqov" (agathos) absolute good ultimate good “Love” is ajgapavw (agapao) a constant, habitual action “Called” is klhtov" (kletos) literally “the called,” dative of advantage

  10. The Call of God John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. (NAS) Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, "It is written, `Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'" (NAS) 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; (NAS) • God wants all men to be saved • He has revealed and continues to reveal Himself to man: • through creation • through human conscience • through His written Word Romans 2:14-15 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness, and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, (NAS) 1 Timothy 2:4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (NAS) 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (NAS) Romans 1:18-20 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. (NAS) Psalms 19:1-2 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. (NAS)

  11. The Call of God John 1:14-18 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John bore witness of Him, and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, `He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'" For of His fulness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained {Him.} (NAS) He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end. (NAS) • He has revealed and continues to reveal Himself to man: • through creation • through human conscience • through His written Word • through the Living Word • through the spoken word • According to Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has set eternity in the hearts of all men. Hebrews 1:1-2 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in {His} Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. (NAS) John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (NAS) 1 Corinthians 2:6-7 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden {wisdom,} which God predestined before the ages to our glory; (NAS)

  12. Roman 8:28 “We know” is oi\da (oida) certain knowledge absolute understanding “Good” is ajgaqov" (agathos) absolute good ultimate good “Called” is klhtov" (kletos) literally “the called,” dative of advantage “Love” is ajgapavw (agapao) a constant, habitual action “The called” are all who answer the call by trusting by in Jesus Christ.

  13. Roman 8:28 “We know” is oi\da (oida) certain knowledge absolute understanding “Good” is ajgaqov" (agathos) absolute good ultimate good “Called” is klhtov" (kletos) literally “the called,” dative of advantage “Love” is ajgapavw (agapao) a constant, habitual action “According to His purpose” is katav provqesi" (kata prothesis) Kata means “according to a norm and a standard.” Prothesis is from pro, “beforehand,” and tithemi, “to set in place.”

  14. Roman 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to {His} purpose. (NAS)

  15. What is the ultimate good that God wants to work out in our lives? He wants us to be conformed to His son.

  16. Romans 8:29-30 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined {to become} conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren; and whom He predestined, these He also called; and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. (NAS)

  17. Romans 8:29-30 “Conformed” is suvmmorfo" (summorphos) from sun, meaning “together” and morphoo, meaning “form, appearance, essence”

  18. The Plan of God Isaiah 14:24 The LORD of hosts has sworn saying, "Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand, (NAS) Acts 2:23 this {Man}, delivered up by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put {Him} to death. (NAS) Isaiah 46:9-10 "Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; {I am} God, and there is no one like me, Declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, `My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure'; (NAS) Psalms 33:11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation. (NAS) Ephesians 1:9-11 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fulness of the times, {that is}, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things upon the earth. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, (NAS) Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever. (NAS) Acts 5:38-39 "And so in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action should be of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God." (NAS) Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but the counsel of the LORD, it will stand. (NAS) Isaiah 46:11 Calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned {it, surely} I will do it. (NAS)

  19. The Plan of God 1 Peter 1:4-5 to {obtain} an inheritance {which is} imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (NAS). • He foreknew–proginwvskw (proginooskoo) “to know something ahead of time” • He predestined –proorivzw(proorizo) Pro, “beforehand” horizo, “to set boundaries” “to make a plan ahead of time” • He called -kalevw(kaleo) “ to call” Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (NASB)

  20. The Plan of God • He justified -dikaiovw(dikaioo) “to declare someone to be legally righteous” • He glorified -doxavzw(doxazo) “to make glorious” “to be well thought of” 2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin {to be} sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (NAS). Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of {God's own} possession, to the praise of His glory. (NAS) Isaiah 43:7 Everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, even whom I have made." (NAS) Romans 9:23 And {He did so} in order that He might make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, (NAS)

Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk IN the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. (NAS) Romans 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace. (NAS) Philippians 2:12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; (NAS) Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 26. The Doctrine of Salvation 1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to {obtain} an inheritance {which is} imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (NAS) SALVATION • Past - Salvation releases from the guilt and PENALTY of sin and is wholly accomplished for all who believe at the time they believe. • Present - Salvation releases the believer from the POWER of sin, and is being accomplished now in those who exercise faith for that release. • Future - Salvation releases from the very PRESENCE of sin. Romans 13:11 And this {do,} knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. (NAS) Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her; that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless. (NAS) Philippians 1:6 {For I am} confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. (NAS)

  28. The Doctrine of Salvation REDEMPTION • to be freed from the bondage of sin because the ransom price was paid by Christ. • Redemption is universal in that it is available to every human being. • It is limited in that it is only attainable by trusting in the person and work of Jesus Christ only for that redemption. a. lutrow (lutroo), lutron (lutron), lutrwsij (lutrosis) this is used for the one who RECEIVED redemption. b. agorazw (agorazo) to buy for oneself for a PRICE freely paid. c. ecagorazw (eksagorazo) to purchase OUT of the market not to return. d. apolutrwsi (apolutrosis) means a FULL deliverance of the soul from sin and of the body from the grave. Revelation 14:4 These are the ones who have not been defiled with women, for they have kept themselves chaste. These {are} the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These have been purchased from among men as first fruits to God and to the Lamb. (NASB) Revelation 14:3 And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one could learn the song except the one hundred and forty-four thousand who had been purchased from the earth. (NASB) Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood {men} from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. (NASB) Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE"-- (NASB) Galatians 4:5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. (NASB) Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. (NASB) Mark 10:45 45 "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." (NASB) Hebrews 9:12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. (NASB) Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace (NASB) Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (NASB) Ephesians 1:14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of {God's own} possession, to the praise of His glory. (NASB) Colossians 1:14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (NASB) 1 Corinthians 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, (NASB) Romans 8:23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for {our} adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. (NASB) Romans 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; (NASB)

  29. Ephesians 2:14-17 For He Himself [Jesus Christ] is our peace, who made both {groups [Jews and Gentiles] into} one, [the spiritual Body of Christ Universal] and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, [reference to the wall around the inner court of the Old Testament tabernacle which separated Jews from Gentiles] by abolishing in His flesh [on the Cross] the enmity, {which is} the Law of commandments {contained} in ordinances [Mosaic Law], that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, {thus} establishing peace, and might reconcile them both [Jews and Gentiles] in one body [the spiritual Body of Christ] to God through the cross, by it [the Cross] having put to death the enmity [Mosaic Law]. And He came and preached peace to you who were far away [Gentiles], and peace to those who were near [Jews]; for through Him we both[Jews and Gentiles] have our access in one Spirit to the Father. (Expanded Translation) The Doctrine of Salvation Colossians 1:19-20 For it was the {Father's} good pleasure for all the fulness [of Deity] to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, {I say}, whether things on earth or things in heaven. (NAS) RECONCILIATION • the removal of the barrier between God and man, replacing man’s hostility toward God with peace with God. • Prior to salvation, mankind is regarded as the enemy of God. • Peace is a synonym for reconciliation. • Jesus Christ came to provide peace with God through His work on the cross. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 Now all {these} things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. (NAS) Romans 5:10 For if while we were enemies [unbelievers], we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved [kept eternally secure] by His life. (NAS) Colossians 1:21-22 And although you were formerly alienated [from God] and hostile in mind, {engaged} in evil deeds, [as unbelievers] yet He [Jesus Christ] has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him [God/Father] holy and blameless and beyond reproach-- (NAS)

  30. The Doctrine of Salvation Leviticus 3:1-5 Now if his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings, if he is going to offer out of the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without defect before the LORD. And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering and slay it at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall sprinkle the blood around on the altar. And from the sacrifice of the peace offerings, he shall present an offering by fire to the LORD, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and the lobe of the liver, which he shall remove with the kidneys. Then Aaron's sons shall offer {it} up in smoke on the altar on the burnt offering, which is on the wood that is on the fire; it is an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD. (NAS) 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 Now all {these} things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (NAS) RECONCILIATION • The peace offering of Leviticus 3 depicts the doctrine of reconciliation. • Every member of the royal family of God (spiritual body of Christ) is an ambassador representing Christ on earth. • Therefore, each member of the royal family has the ministry of reconciliation.

Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness [human works, self righteousness], but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, (NAS) 1 John 2:1-2 My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins [His perfect Person and perfect work satisfied the righteousness and justice of God/Father]; and not for ours [believers] only, but also for {those of} the whole world. (NAS) Hebrews 2:9 But we do see Him who has been made for a little while lower than the angels, {namely,} Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. 34. The Doctrine of Salvation Leviticus 16:13-16 "And he shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on {the ark of} the testimony, lest he die. "Moreover, he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle {it} with his finger on the mercy seat on the east {side}; also in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. "Then he shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil, and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. "And he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the impurities of the sons of Israel, and because of their transgressions, in regard to all their sins; and thus he shall do for the tent of meeting which abides with them in the midst of their impurities. (NAS) Exodus 25:17-22 "And you shall make a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and one and a half cubits wide. "And you shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat. "And make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim {of one piece} with the mercy seat at its two ends. "And the cherubim shall have {their} wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the cherubim are to be {turned} toward the mercy seat. "And you shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony which I shall give to you. "And there I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, I will speak to you about all that I will give you in commandment for the sons of Israel. (NAS) PROPITIATION • Propitiation, translated from the Greek word i(lasth/rion (hilasteerion), means “that which expiates or propitiates.” • This same Greek word hilasterion relates this doctrine to the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant. • Propitiation is related to the work of Christ on the cross. • Propitiation resolves the problem of the demands of God’s righteousness and justice. Romans 3:25 whom God displayed publicly [on Calvary’s cross] as a propitiation in His blood [spiritual death] through faith. {This was} to demonstrate His [God/Father’s] righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He [God/Father] passed over the sins previously committed; [ all mankind’s sins prior to the cross ] (Expanded Translation) Hebrews 9:5 And above it {were} the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat [ iJlasthvrion]; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail. The Doctrine of Salvation CONVICTION The work of the Holy Spirit when He enlightens the unbeliever of SIN, RIGHTEOUSNESS and JUDGMENT. • What sin? - the sin of unbelief • What righteousness? - the righteousness of Jesus • What judgment? - the judgment of Satan Psalm 110:1 The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet." (NAS)

  38. The Myth of Conviction elegko (elegko) convict or convince process whereby one is caused to reach certain conclusions or impressions in his mind. • Too often it is assumed that this approach is through the emotions and that conviction consists in a spiritual depression and sorrow for sin. • The emotion which may arise in the heart is itself due to conviction • It is not the convinced state of mind itself. • God's attitude toward the individual's sin has been thoroughly changed and this because of the fact that Christ has borne his sin. Wrong

  39. John 15:7-11 [imputed righteousness; cf. Philippians 3:9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from {the} Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which {comes} from God on the basis of faith, (NAS) 2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin {to be} sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (NAS)], [the Son’s return to the Father was evidence that He had secured the provision of perfect righteousness for sinners; it was to be theirs now through faith alone in Christ alone] 7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper [the Holy Spirit] shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 "And He [the Holy Spirit], when He comes, will convict [enlighten] the world concerning sin [genitive singular of a(marti/a (hamartia)], and righteousness, and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world [Satan] has been judged. (NAS) [that is the sin: unbelief; rejection of Jesus Christ]

  40. The Myth of Conviction elegcei(elegxei), (3SFAI) elegko (elegko) to bring to light; set forth; demonstrate; prove; to convict or convince someone of something, to point something out to someone. kosmoj (kosmos) order, disposition, arrangement usually translated world

  41. The Myth of Conviction • This work of enlightenment, known theologically as common grace, overcomes the blindness which Satan has imposed respecting the gospel. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 And even if our gospel is veiled [hidden, concealed], it is veiled to those who are perishing, [unbelievers] in whose case the god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (NAS)

  42. The Myth of Conviction CONVICTION • OF SIN • Reference here is to the one sin that "they believe not on me." • He reveals to the unsaved simply the one sin of REJECTING CHRIST. • OF RIGHTEOUSNESS • in the invisible Christ now at the right hand of God has been provided every merit and quality which one could ever need for time or eternity

  43. The Myth of Conviction CONVICTION • OF SIN • OF RIGHTEOUSNESS • OF JUDGMENT • In the use of the word judgment at this point allusion is made to the cross of Christ by which Satan, "the prince of this world," was judged. • The entire fact has to do with Satan's hold upon humanity on the ground that they are unlike God through sin. Colossians 2:14-15 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us {and} which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through the cross. (NAS)

  44. The unsaved are expected to recognize that they, like criminals, only to have Another, by His own choice, intervene and suffer execution in the sinner's stead. The Myth of Conviction John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (NAS) have been apprehended, brought into judgment, found guilty, and led out to be executed, 44

  45. The Doctrine of Salvation REPENTANCE means to change one’s thinking, or to change the mind. • Repentance is a rational decision based on thought, not emotion. • The unbeliever must first “change his mind” about who Jesus Christ is and what He did for mankind on the cross and then trusting in Him and His work brings salvation. • “Repent of your sin” does not mean that you are to feel sorry for your sin. Romans 2:4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? (NAS) Mark 1:14-15 And after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." (NAS)

  46. The Doctrine of Salvation REPENTANCE • The inhale is the principle of common grace, in which the Holy Spirit takes the message of the witness and makes it a reality in the mentality of the unbeliever. • After full understanding, positive volition expresses itself in a change of mental attitude: FAITH IN CHRIST. • A change in mental attitude about the person and work of Christ equals repentance. • Repentance results in the exhale of faith in Jesus Christ: salvation adjustment to the justice of God. John 16:8-11 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. (NASB) 2 Timothy 2:25 with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, (NAS) 1 Corinthians 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. (NAS)

  47. The Doctrine of Salvation REPENTANCE • Emotion never saves anyone. • Feeling sorry for your sins does not save you, only faith in Christ saves you. • Spiritual growth demands repentance toward human good • Human good is dead to the plan and policy of God. • Human good is linked with arrogance and produces boasting Ephesians 2:9 not as a result of works, that no one should boast. (NAS) Romans 4:2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about; but not before God. (NAS) Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, (NAS)

  48. The Doctrine of Salvation 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is {to be} revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. If any man's work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire. (NAS) Revelation 20:12-15 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is {the book} of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one {of them} according to their deeds. And death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (NAS) REPENTANCE • Human good is never acceptable to God • Human good will not save man • Unbeliever human good will be judged • The believer's human good will be judged at the Judgment Seat of Christ Isaiah 64:6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; and all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. (NAS) 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (NAS) Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, {it is} the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. (NAS)

  49. The Doctrine of Salvation REPENTANCE • An ANTHROPOPATHISM ascribes to God a human characteristic He does not possess, but explains divine policy in terms of human frame of reference. • God never changes His mind, but is said to in such passages as • God is immutable and does not change. Exodus 32:11-14 Then Moses entreated the LORD his God, and said, "O LORD, why doth Thine anger burn against Thy people whom Thou hast brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? "Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, `With evil {intent} He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth'? Turn from Thy burning anger and change Thy mind about {doing} harm to Thy people. "Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Thy servants to whom Thou didst swear by Thyself, and didst say to them, `I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit {it} forever.'" So the LORD changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people. (NAS) Genesis 6:6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. (NAS) 1 Samuel 15:35 And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death; for Samuel grieved over Saul. And the LORD regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel. (NAS) Psalm 90:11-13 Who understands the power of Thine anger, and Thy fury, according to the fear that is due Thee? So teach us to number our days, that we may present to Thee a heart of wisdom. Do return, O LORD; how long {will it be}? And be sorry for Thy servants. (NAS) Jeremiah 26:3 `Perhaps they will listen and everyone will turn from his evil way, that I may repent of the calamity which I am planning to do to them because of the evil of their deeds.' (NAS) Jeremiah 26:13 "Now therefore amend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will change His mind about the misfortune which He has pronounced against you. (NAS)

  50. REPENTANCE METAMELOMAI Versus METANOEO. METAMELOMAI should be translated REGRET. It means to feel sorry for something you've done. It is used for regretting a previous action, It is used for the attitude of Judas Iscariot, It is used for God having no regrets about saving people, both Jews and Gentiles, in this present Age, The Father has no regrets regarding the appointment of Jesus Christ as our High Priest. The Doctrine of Salvation Hebrews 7:21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent [metamelhqhvsetai(metamelethestai)], Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) (KJV) Matthew 21:29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented [metamelhqei;" (metameleetheis)], and went. (KJV) Matthew 27:3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented [ metamelhqei;" (metameleetheis) ] himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, (KJV) Romans 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance [ajmetamevlhta(ametameleta)].
