Lesson 6: Suffix • A suffix is an affix added to the end of the word that changes the meaning of the word • Suffixes –y and –ous mean like, having, to some degree, somewhat, or full of. • Example: The wealthy king in the fairy tale had many chests filled with gold. • wealthy • wealth means riches • wealthy must mean full of wealth or having lots of wealth

  6. Grammar: Verbs • a VERBis a word that shows ACTION • an ACTION VERB is a word that tells what a person/thing is doing • The girl sang very loudly. • What did the girl do? She SANG. • When a subject is a singular noun or he, she, or it – add an s to most verbs • If the verb ends with s, sh, ch, x, or x – add an es

  7. Grammar: Verbs • Some verbs are more than one word. • The MAIN VERB is the most important word • The HELPING VERB comes before the main verb • Example: Ryan iswriting a science fiction story. • writing = main verb • is = helping verb

Grammar: Verb Tenses • Verb tenses tell when the action takes place • Present tense: shows the action is happening now • The girl walks the dog. • Past tense: shows the action has already happened • The girl walked the dog. • Future tense: shows that the action will happen • The girl will walk the dog. • A helping verb (have, has, or had) comes before the main verb and tells more about what happened in the past. The past participle of a regular verb is used by adding –ed. • They have watched that movie three times.

Grammar: Progressive Tenses • Progressive forms of verbs shows actions that continue over time. • Present Progressive – action that happens over and over in the future • use helping verb (form of be) AND add –ing to main vern • He is playing. • Past Progressive – happened over and over in past • uses ‘was’ or ‘were’ has helping verbs • He was working. • Future Progressive – action that will happen over and over in future • - uses WILL BE as helping verb • He will be reading.

Grammar: Compound/Complex Sentences • A compound sentence has 2 simple sentences joined together • joined by adding a comma and a conjunction (and, but, or so) • Ex: Some people read books, andothers talked quietly. • A complex sentence is made up of a simple sentence and a dependent clause • Dependent Clause - subject and predicate but NOT COMPLETE SENTENCE • Simple sentence and clause and joined together by a subordinating conjunction: after, although, because, before, until, if, since, and while • Ex: The snake slithered under a rock before the sun became too hot.
