  1. THE SPIRIT OF GREAT OAK Ideas for fitting Band into students’ schedules!!! PE Policy as it relates to Band

  2. Foundation of Freshmen SchedulesBand/Colorguard/Drum Line Student Core 4 • 1 English 9 or Pre-IB English 9 • 2 Math – see GOHS Math Dept Placement Info online • 3 Science – • Global Science, • Pre-AP Biology (If an A or B in Algebra 1 as 8th; and in Geometry in 9th), • Chemistry (If and A or B in Geometry or above in 8th; taking Algebra 2/PRE-IB Alg 2 or above in 9th). • 4 PE – Year of Freshmen PE required. • 5 Geography/Health, AP Human Geography, or OPEN SPOT for Intermediate Band/Guard/Drum line. • 6 Open Elective – World Language, Int Band/CG/DL, AVID.

  3. Points to Remember • Freshmen PE 1 Y is required year long for all freshmen, except for JROTC students who must have PE 1 B in their schedule, and Varsity Athletes who meet the state exemption option. • JROTC/Aerospace Science does not take up any additional room unless your taking AP Human Geography – you can still do JROTC and Intermediate Band/Color Guard/Drum Line. • JROTC/Aerospace Science counts for PE 1 A 1st semester 9th/Health 2nd semester. So if students did JROTC 9th/10th they have meet PE 20 credit req. • Geography (1 sem) or AP Human Geography (1 year) are required for graduation – you will have year-long other social sciences classes in 10th – 12th. You can take Geography/Health requirement at anytime 9th – 12th. May fit in schedule later, summer school options, online options.

  4. Points to Remember • World Langauge is NOT, NOT, NOT required to earn diploma from GOHS!!! 2 years, or more, of WL is required for 4 yr University entrance requirements. No requirement for CC’s. • World Language is mandatory if planning on entering IB program as a junior (less than 10% of GOHS pop). Spanish or French only – ASL is not accepted for IB program. • ASL 1 is NOT open to 9th grades in 2011.2012 at this time since upper classmen have filled all the spaces. If considering ASL as your language you can fit Int Band in schedule in 9th easily!! • AVID program goal is to be enrolled every semester all 4 years.

  5. Placement and Transition Thoughts for 9th Schedule • World Language – we see strong correlation with 8th English/Language Arts grades and success/or lack of successs in 9th World Language – if C and below consistently (w/ CST’s consistent with that grade) – please seriously consider NOT doing French/Spanish in 9th grade. • AP Human Geography – College Level Curriculum with need for strong work ethic and responsibility – please don’t underestimate this course. 1 hr outside of class for every hour in class is min. rec. More reading, notes, writing and essays on tests. Strongly encourage A’s/B’s in 8th Language Arts and History and strong work ethic and personal responsibility. Can NOT drop class after the 10th day of semester!! Students often say “but I am going to work harder next year”. We recommend waiting until they have PROVEN it in a regular class, then let them take the AP class the next year. • Math recommendation – the Math Department placement is based on years of experience, dealing with missplaced students, and looking at the data. Please seriously consider it before doing a Math Waiver. If you override the waiver there is no guarantee we will honor changing it later depending on class sizes and impacts on master schedule.

  6. Schedules that will NOT work in 9th!!!“2’s company/3’s a crowd rule” • You only have room for two electives with some creativity in the 9th schedule. If you are trying to fit 3 of the following in your schedule at the same time – IT WILL NOT WORK – you have to rule out one: • Intermediate Band, JROTC, World Language, AP Human Geography, AVID, IB (11th/12th only), or another elective with two of the previous. • Attempting 2 at same time in 9th usually can work – see the next slides.

  7. Will 3 of those fit in 10th – 12th at the same time? • 10th – No – you have English, Math, Social Science, and Science all year with only 2 spots open. • 11th & 12th – Maybe - depending on your post high school goals and if you need science in your schedule. Yet, please meet with your counselor to get specific advice!!! It is important the you make the best decisions for your post high school goals. If you are applying to universities or are an athlete pursuing NCAA Div 1 or 2 NCAA eligibility, you could seriously jeopardize your admissions or qualifying status if you attempt 3 in the same schedule during this period.

  13. GOHS PE Policy As it relates to the Band Program Small Print – I am just a messenger 

  14. Does Band/Colorguard/Drum Line Count for PE credit – when/how. • Current PE Policy – drawn from Ed Code, State Law, Administrative Regulations and PE Dept Policy • All students must pass 20 credits of PE to meet the PE course Graduation Requirement. Students are also mandated to pass 5 out of 6 skills of the CA State Physical Fitness Exam or continue to take PE 2 or Aerobics every semester until they pass the tests. • Band Exceptions – noted on next slides. • Varsity Athletes exemption – case by case. • JROTC/Aerospace Science exemption • Medical Directed Exemptions

  15. Does Band/Colorguard/Drum Line Count for PE credit – when/how. • 9th - Band (includes all the above) does NOT count for PE during Freshmen year at all. • 10th - Band does count for 1 semester of PE credit 1st sem ONLY in 10th grade for students participating in Marching Band and who have Intermediate Band (Band/Color Guard/Drum Line) in their schedule. Jazz Ensemble and students who do not participate in Marching Band the entire season do NOT get PE credit. • Students do NOT have to have a PE class in their schedule 1st semester. • Students who do NOT PASS 5 out of 6 of the CA State Fitness Test by the end of the 1st semster in 10th – will have to have PE 2 or Aerobics in their schedules in the 2nd Semester in 10th. 1st sem Band/2nd sem PE. They cannot take Dance, Wgts, or Walking PE. • Students who Pass 5 out of 6 of the CA State Fitness Test do Not have to have PE in their schedule 2nd semester.

  16. Does Band/Colorguard/Drum Line Count for PE credit – when/how. • NOTE – At this point in time - Band does NOT quailfy for Athletic PE Waiver – only Varsity/JV Athletes. Band has to be in students schedule 1st semester 10th – 12th to count 4 PE. • 11th & 12th – Band does count for 1 semester of PE credit 1st sem ONLY in 11th and 12th grades for students participating in Marching Band and who have Advanced Band in their schedule. Jazz Ensemble and students who do not participate in Marching Band the entire season do NOT get PE credit. • Students who participate in Marching Band and have Advanced Band in their schedule all year – do NOT have to have PE in their schedule either semester – regardless of whether they Passed the 5 out of 6 of State Fit Test or not. • Yet students participating in Marching Band still have to have completed 20 credits of PE. This could include 10 credits from PE 1 and either 10 credits from two 1st semesters of Marching Band or in any other way.

  17. Independent PE Policy • Posted on the TVUSD website under quick links – deadline moved back to May 13th. Application is involved and takes time!!! • Applications should be turned into the students school site. • I have been told that it’s intent was for elite athletes on approved list of out-side-school activities for individuals that dedicated hours per day and compete nationally. Extremely small number approved (less than 5) expected district wide.
