Nationalists Economic Policies • Henry Clay advocated new economic nationalism. • Said tariff of 1816 was part of American System. • Wanted roadways and canals to link Atlantic with Midwest. • Favored reestablishment of national banks. • Charter of first bank expired in 1811. • Second bank established 1816.

Marshall’s Court Boosts Federal Power • Marshall was justice from 1801- 1835. • Favored strong federal government and national economy. • Marbury vs. Madison (1803) • Established court’s power to review Congress. • Dartmouth College vs. Woodward (1819) Fletcher vs. Peck (1810) • Limited state government power • McChulloch vs. Maryland (1819) • Federal superior to state law. • Gibbons vs. Ogden (1824) • Regulates inter-state commerce.

Expanding United States • Monroe and Adams hoped to reduce tensions • Promoting national expansion • 1819 Spain sold Florida to the united states • Felt pressured to give up land from the Seminole war in 1818 • Seminoles fought with u.s. because they provided safe havens for slaves • Andrew Jackson led a force into Florida to seize Spanish forts • Adams-onis treaty • Ended Spanish claims with pacific coast territory • British claimed Oregon as well • 1818 united states and great Britain agreed to share the contested territory • After Americans settled in Florida

  7. The Monroe Doctrine • Adams formulated this policy • Responded to threats by European powers • Britain proposed uniting with the U.S. • 1823-issued European monarchies to stop meddling. • Became significant in the late 1890’s when U.S. sent armed forces into Latin American countries

Compromise of Slavery • Scared for unbalance if Missouri came as a slave state • Missouri Compromise • Northern Massachusetts became Maine which is a free state • Line across the continent dividing free and slave states • Southwest corner of Missouri to nation’s western boundary • South of line were slave states • North of the line were free states
