  1. ELECTRICITY

  2. WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The flow of electrons through something. It is capable of doing work -- making things glow, heating things up.

  3. ELECTRICITY FLOWING THROUGH A WIRE & TURNING ON A LIGHT

  4. MEASURING ELECTRICITY -- VOLTAGE Voltage = The force (pressure) that pushes the electrons. Like water falling. The higher the water falls the more force it has. V stands for Voltage

  5. MEASURING ELECTRICITY -- CURRENT Current -- The flow of electrons between two points. Like the water current in a river. I stands for current

  6. MEASURING ELECTRICITY -- RESISTANCE Resistance -- A measure of what is preventing the flow of electrons Like rocks or bends in a river. R stands for resistance

  7. ELECTRICITY & WATER ANALOGY

  8. MEASURING ELECTRICITY -- POWER Electrical Power -- Measures the rate of electricity being made or used. P = V X I Measured in Watts (W, kW, MW)

  9. CIRCUITS Electricity only moves in closed loops called circuits.

  10. TYPES OF CIRCUITS SERIES PARALLEL

  11. ENERGY Primary Source of Energy = coal, oil, solar, wind, etc Secondary Source of Energy = electricity

  12. STEPS TO ELECTRICITY 1. Electricity is generated -- by powerplants 2. Goes to a transformer -- Voltage is stepped up 3. Goes through transmission lines -- called the electric grid 4. Goes to a transformer -- Voltage is stepped down 5. Goes through distribution lines -- powerlines along roads that go to neighborhoods 6. Goes to a transformer -- Voltage is stepped down 7. Goes into your house.

  13. STEPS TO ELECTRICITY

  14. ELECTRICITY IN YOUR HOME 1. Enters your home through a 3-wire cable. 2. Enters your circuit breaker or fuse box. 3. Runs to all the outlets and switches in your house
