The Electronic Patient Record • The Electronic Patients Record is the key working tool for the hospital staff • As the first region in Denmark, the Funen Region implemented EPR in 1992 at one hospital. • By the end of this year 100 % of the hospital beds and out-patient clinics will be covered with one EPR system.

  7. Communication and GPs • Since 1992 communication between GPs and hospitals have been the key issue for the development of connecting healthcare in the region. • Funen Region took the initiative to form the national organisation of MedCom with the aim to establish national standards for communication in healthcare

  8. Communication flows

  9. 98% of the GPs have EPR and are connected In November 2005 the following were sent between GPs and hospitals in Funen: 69537 discharge letters 97651 laboratory results 113775 prescriptions 12677 referrals Status of the communication with GPs

  10. Status of MedCom standards in Denmark 3.2 million messages /month

  11. Hospital GP Homecare Communication with homecare • Funen Region has made a huge effort to decrease the ”Bermuda Triangle” in healthcare – the triangle between hospital, GP and Homecare, where information has a tendency to disappear.

  13. Telemedicine projects • Because Denmark’s health sector is connected, telemedicine projects have a high focus and priority.

  14. Telemedicine and Homecare • Electronic renewal of prescriptions • Clinical email for fast and secure communication between GP, hospital and homecare (no-structured messages) • Tele-dermatology – digital images sent to specialists for examination • Tele-homecare - in spring 2006 COPD patients will be treated in their own home by using video conference, tele-monitoring and tele-Rehabilitations

  15. Other telemedicine projects in the Region • Video conference projects: Between health professionals and as a therapeutic instrument for alcoholics • Tele-radiology: Between hospitals • Hans Christian Andersen Children’s hospital: digital support for electronic communication • Tele-social care: Electronic communication between social care institutions
