  1. Northwood School Grade 12 Information Evening 23 January 2014

  2. Set the tone for the year • Look at pass and endorsement requirements • Stress urgency of final year Purpose of the meeting

  3. Information on official computers – All on the central certification register • Subject changes virtually impossible (Monday 27 January) • ID documents needed • Immigrants here less than five years • Concessions – possible but unlikely Matric Entries

  4. 100 % pass rate • 90 % Bachelor’s pass 2014 Targets

  5. Hard work • Time management • No transference of blame • Accepting of consequences • Clear goals and objectives What is needed to achieve these targets?

  6. English 40% • 2 Subjects 40% • 3 Subjects 30% • 1 Subject Fail • No 39’s to 40 or 79’s to 80! Pass and Endorsement requirements

  7. TYPESOF MATRIC PASS

  8. TYPESOF MATRIC A pass in FIVE subjects, including a minimum of 40 % in the language of learning and teaching. ENGLISH 40 % TWO OTHER SUBJECTS 40 % THREE OTHER SUBJECTS 30 % ONE FAILING SUBJECT ALLOWED

  9. TYPESOF MATRIC The minimum admission requirement to a Diploma is a NSC as certified by Umalusi, with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the chosen higher education institution, as well as an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate achievement, 40-49%) or better in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects – NOT L.O.

  10. TYPESOF MATRIC The minimum admission requirement to a Bachelor's Degree is a NSC as certified by Umalusi, with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the chosen higher education institution, as well as an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate achievement, 50-59%) or better in four subjects chosen from the following list of recognised 20-credit NSC subjects

  11. 4 “designated” subjects at 50% • All Northwood subjects are “designated” except Life Orientation • Individual University departments may have own requirements • Maths Literacy does not prevent University Entrance Degree requirements – Bachelor’s pass

  12. Points scale & Percentages

  13. 1. A minimum of 15% of new entrants to each programme will be selected from students who have completed their schooling at Quintile 1 or 2 schools and meet all the minimum entry requirements for the programme. Specific programmes may provide for increased quotas. Within quotas, selection will be done on academic merit.  Note that no bonus points are awarded for additional subjects.

  14. 2. The APS is calculated by adding the performance levels (1-8) for the six subjects taken for the NSC excluding Life Orientation (LO). If more than seven subjects are taken the APS is calculated by adding the performance level for: • English (HL or FAL), plus • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, plus • the best ratings of the other subjects (excluding Life Orientation and Maths paper 3) so that a total of six subjects are included.

  15. Calculation of Admission Points Score (APS) for the NSC The percentages achieved in NSC examinations (preliminary and finals) will be allocated a score equal to that percentage. The sum of six subject scores, excluding Life Orientation, but including English and any other required subject(s) for the relevant programme, is considered when deciding on admission. (In other words, for a given programme where Mathematics and Physical Sciences are required, we will take the scores for English, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and the next best three subjects other than Life Orientation to compute the NSC score towards the APS.) Results below 40% for any subject do not attract a score. In the Faculties of Engineering & the Built Environment, and Health Sciences, the NBT score forms part of the APS. In the Faculties of Engineering & the Built Environment, and Science, the Mathematics Paper 3 contributes to the APS.

  16. No final exam (?), only course work • Differences in University admission requirements • DO NOT take lightly and rely on passing all the others • Need for portfolio - incomplete = incomplete result • Need to participate in the physical component Life Orientation

  17. Importance • Weighting 25:75 • Continuous assessment • Compilation varies subject by subject • Absenteeism • Moderation Year Mark

  18. 1st term + 2nd term + June + Trials • Internal use, for subject prizes, colours, etc. • 75 % = Half Colours • 80 % = Full Colours • 85 % = Honours School Awards

  19. Part of the CASS (continuous assessment) • Kept by the subject teacher • Must be available for inspection by the department at any time Portfolios

  20. Extra lessons • Definitely for strugglers, and for the ambitious • Maths, Physical and Life Sciences in particular Extra Classes & Tuition

  21. Matrics buy-in • “In the classroom” • Fulfill commitments • Be role models to juniors We need:
