  2. Acceleration • A change in velocity over a change in time • This can be: speeding up, slowing down, or changing directions

  3. Acceleration Due to Gravity • If air resistance is zero, all objects accelerate downwards at 9.81 m/s2 [down] • g = 9.81 m/s2 [down] • If an object accelerates downwards at this rate, we say it is in free fall • Ex. Drop zone at Canada’s Wonderland

  4. What does acceleration mean mathematically? • Example 1: • Velocity is 5.0 m/s [fwd], acceleration is 1.0 m/s2 [fwd] • Os: 5.0 m/s [fwd] • 1s: 6.0 m/s [fwd] • 2s: 7.0m/s [fwd] • 3s: 8.0m/s [fwd] • 4s: 9.0 m/s [fwd] • Moving forward, speeding up

  5. Example 2: • Velocity is 5.0 m/s [fwd], acceleration is 1.0 m/s2 [backwards] • Os: 5.0 m/s [fwd] • 1s: 4.0 m/s [fwd] • 2s: 3.0m/s [fwd] • 3s: 2.0m/s [fwd] • 4s: 1.0 m/s [fwd] • Moving forward, slowing down

  8. Example: • Felix Baumgartner is at rest as he jumps from space. If he is falling for 259s (4 min, 19s), what speed will he reach? Assume there is no air resistance. • Ans: 2.54 x 103 m/s
