  2. Profile: Wind Energy Agency Bremerhaven/Bremen (WAB) • Association with over 210 members from industry, services and science from Bremen/Oldenburg and surrounding coastal region • Companies from a broad industry spectrum, covering full value chain • Partly funded by the Federal State of Bremen (≈30%) to facilitate innovation and structural change • Focus on: • Offshore • Repowering • Network / cluster development EOW2009, Stockholm

  3. Drivers for Wind Cluster Development in NW-Germany • Offshore development is strongest driver • Onshore turbine size is driver • Nearby port logistics needed for export • Growing size and maturity of industry sector • Now ≈ 100,000 jobs in wind industry in Germany • Large industrial players have entered market • Economic Crisis • Since 2008 many newcomers with significant capabilities and capacities enter market in the region EOW2009, Stockholm

  4. The german market: Licensed Offshore Wind Farms • 21 licences have been granted in the North Sea, 5 in the Baltic Sea • Max. 80 Turbines per wind farm • 3.6 – 6.5 MW turbines proposed • ≈ 1,300 turbines • 5,000 – 6,000 MW rated power, depending on turbine size • 56 more projects undergoing licensing procedures • Total value: 15 – 18 Billion € Members of WAB Map: WAB Offshore Magazine 2009 - www.windenergie-agentur.de

  5. Offshore Turbines in Region • Prototypes built onshore since 2004 • Manufacturing sites built since 2006 • Production ramp up since 2008 • 300 – 600 5 MW turbines per year Repower 5M Multibrid M5000 Bard VM Source: Bard Source: "obs/REpower Systems AG" EOW2009, Stockholm

  6. Offshore Foundations and Towers Facility for serial production of tripods, jackets under construction in Bremerhaven Facility for tripile construction in Cuxhaven Tower facilities with quayside in Bremen and Cuxhaven Gravity foundations planned in Cuxhaven 2010 EOW2009, Stockholm

  7. Rotor Blades • Producing rotor blades since 1993 in Lemwerder • Joint Venture of REpower Systems (51%) and SGL Rotec (49%), Bremerhaven • Prokon Nord facility aquired by AREVA in August 2009, Stade EOW2009, Stockholm

  8. R&D Resources Acoustically optimised wind tunnel, Bremerhaven • Universities of: • Oldenburg • Hanover • Bremen (August 2009) • Test centre for rotor blades and offshore structures, Bremerhaven EOW2009, Stockholm

  9. Political Highlights 2005-2009: • Confindence Level sharply improving • Significant industry investments • Projects starting in 2009/2010 • Alpha ventus (12 Turbines) • Baltic I (21) • Bard Offshore I (80) • Nordergründe (25) EOW2009, Stockholm

  10. alpha ventus: a Lighthouse project for Northwest Wind Cluster Very high contribution from Northwest-Germany by WAB-members 12 Turbines - 60 MW rated power 2009: 6 Multibrid M5000 (installed on tripods) 2009: 6 Repower 5M Operated by „DOTI“-consortium: utilities EWE, E.ON, Vattenfall Grid connection installed 2008 and operational „Catalyst“ function for industry EOW2009, Stockholm

  11. Regional Strategy behind Offshore Development • Provide locations for prototypes • Provide specialised offshore port infrastructure • Bremerhaven • Cuxhaven • ... • Facilitate regional networking structures to build „critical mass“ • WAB e.V. - industry • ForWind - research • Strong long-term political backing EOW2009, Stockholm
