  2. The office of government relations • Identify and advocate for UM System priorities • State • Federal • Networking & Engagement • Education • Policy

  3. Priorities How are priorities chosen? (State and Federal processes) Who is engaged in the decision to set priorities? Once priorities are determined, how do we advocate for those priorities? Best method for educating stakeholders and elected officials

  4. Networking & Engagement • Key to successful advocacy is relationships! • Meetings & frequent contact • Events • Legislative Day • Faculty, Staff and Student Engagement

  5. Education • Promote support for the UM System through educational efforts • Community Impact • Economic Impact • Health Outcomes • Funding needs • Gov’t Relations engagement and interaction with UM System educators, faculty, staff, students and leaders

  6. Policy • Familiarity with the legislative process • Review filed bills • Track legislation throughout the process • Committee hearings • Report back – GR Blog • Advocate on behalf of UM System’s interests, priorities and funding

  7. When to talk to county engagement specialist or RD • Any conflicts involving legislators • Proposed legislation impacting Extension or UM System • Events that legislators are attending

  8. How Can you help? (in Jefferson City) ***Please let Government Relations know if you plan to be in the Capitol meeting with legislators • Meet with your elected officials • Thank legislators for their support of higher education • MAKE IT PERSONAL  • Share stories and information on how the University of Missouri has impacted you personally, how it impacts their district • District Data Sheets • All Things MO

  9. How can you help? (At Home) • Engagement – This is KEY to success at the Capitol! • Invitations to events such as Field Days, Educational events, 4-H events, etc., Council Dinners • Introduce them to services that you provide • Share personal stories • Be a resource • Show support for their efforts also • Attend meet and greets, coffee and donuts, etc.
