  2. What is voluntary work? Every one can be a volunteer. Voluntary work means: Spend time on doing something useful without getting paid (expense allowance) A volunteer is not on the wage list Not by virtue of one’s profession No workplace

  3. What is voluntary work? Does not compete with paid work Less than 20 hours a week Voluntary work is voluntary but not without any obligations

History in the Netherlands Late 1800: denominational segregation Early 1900: increase in wealth and spare time After WWII: ‘verzorgingsstaat’ an independent country 1960: denominational segregation comes to its end 1970: governmental interest in the volunteer 1990: civil society, the government gives instructions
