  3. Morning Schedule

  4. Afternoon Schedule

  5. ABC’s of First Grade • AttendanceRegular attendance without tardiness is a key to success. Family situations do arise but please try not to schedule optional vacations during school time. Should your child be late, please check in at the office. If your child is buying lunch, stop by at the office to place their order. • Arrival Students should be at school by 9:00, arriving no earlier than 8:45. If students arrive early, they leave their backpack in the hallway and go outside. Students are not allowed to “hang out” in the hallway as they are not supervised.

  6. ABC’s of First Grade • BirthdaysYou are welcome to send birthday treats. If your child has a summer birthday, you are welcome to celebrate at their half birthday. Please let me know in advance. • Book OrdersBook orders will come home every month or so. Ordering books online earns our classroom extra points. I am still looking for a parent volunteer to take this on! 

  7. ABC’s of First Grade • Conferences Parent/Teacher conferences are November 18th - 22ndand students are dismissed early to allow time for conferences. Please let me know at any time should you have questions and/or comments.

  8. ABC’s of First Grade • Discipline Each child will be given a weekly “Bee your Best” sheet. These will be used throughout the day allowing me to give compliments and/or reminders as needed. These are to go back and forth to and from school daily. Please watch for these and initial and return to school each day.

  9. ABC’s of First Grade • DismissalAll car riders are released and meet their parents at the flagpole. If your child has a change in transportation, you must notify me. Do not rely on your child to tell us this information because children often may become confused and relay information incorrectly. If I do not have a note, I will stick with the normal routine.

  10. ABC’s of First Grade • E-mail is the best way to reach me. Please check your e-mail often for communication. If you have not received e-mail from me, please list your address on the clipboard. If you do not have e-mail I will send copies of communication home. I do check e-mail at home as well so if you have an urgent question, send me an e-mail. • Emergency ClosingsIn the event of school closure, please tune in to television, radio or internet (http://www.svsd410.org) to check on school closure. Check out schoolreport.org to sign up to receive e-mail notification regarding school closure or late start information. There is a link to this website on the district site as well.

  11. ABC’s of First Grade • Field Trips are scheduled. Please watch for further information. • Arboretum – April 18th • Days with Frog and Toad-January 9th Seattle Children’s Theater

  12. ABC’s of First Grade • Grades Most (but not all) papers are corrected, scored and entered into my grade book. Later in the year, I will mark papers with the following marks: 4 – Exceeding standards “For a 4, show me more!” Must be without errors and shows further understanding, exceeding expectations. 3 – Meeting standard 2 – Working towards standard 1 – Below standard Please build into your homework routine a time to look at your child’s work that has come home. I may indicate, “Please review with your child” or “Please finish and return.” Papers marked “review” do not need to be returned.

  13. ABC’s of First Grade • Handwriting During the first months of the year we will fine tune our handwriting skills. • HomeworkFirst grade is a great year for establishing positive homework habits. Homework will be sent home on Friday and returned the following Friday. I do not give a grade for homework other than turned in on time or not. With that in mind, please help you child as you feel appropriate.

  14. ABC’s of First Grade • IllnessChildren function more effectively in the classroom when they are healthy. Children must be FEVER and VOMIT FREE for 24 HOURS before returning to school! Fever free means with out the use of fever reducing medication. • JournalsStudents will be given the opportunity to write on a daily basis. It is a delight to watch their writing skills emerge and advance as the year progresses.

  15. ABC’s of First Grade • Kid MailPlease have your child bring their “Home Folder” to school daily! Student work and SES mail will go home throughout the week. Our morning routine includes students turning in their folders. I try to check each folder to be sure that they have turned in any mail. Please check for mail each day.

  16. ABC’s of First Grade • Lost & FoundPlease check the Lost and Found frequently for those missing items! • LunchOur class will be eating lunch at 11:50 with recess immediately following. Please see the lunch link on our website for further information.

  17. ABC’s of First Grade • MathMath instruction takes place daily using our curriculum, “Everyday Mathematics.” Students will be given a pre and post test with each unit and challenge packets will be available should your child pass the pre-test. Pre tests are only for me to better understand your child’s needs for the coming unit. I will send home pre-tests but please remember, this is a “ pre-test” before we have taught the unit. In other words, expect that you child will not know the material. I send it home so that you can better support your child’s learning at home. Students also will work on math timings at their own level.

  18. ABC’s of First Grade • Name – Please remind your child to put his/her name on their paper if you see it is often missing! • Outside Play Recess occurs three times per day! Please be sure to send warm clothes and appropriate footwear for those chilly and/or wet days!

  19. ABC’s of First Grade • Power Up! Students will have an additional thirty minutes per day to “Power Up” their literacy skills. All first grade students will join peers who are learning at similar levels. This opportunity will allow for instruction to be specifically directed to each level and need. Grouping decisions will be based on reading scores and teacher discretion and adjustments will be made as needed.

  20. ABC’s of First Grade • Questions? Don’t be shy to ask. Contact me by phone or e-mail: (425) 831-8054 voncappelns@svsd410.org

  21. ABC’s of First Grade • Reading Reading instruction will take place each day and is a vital part of first grade! In addition, all students bring home books to be read at home. Reading logs are due each Friday with a goal for every child to read 100 minutes per week! If your child is unable to read yet, your reading to them counts. Children get to be better readers by reading!

  22. ABC’s of First Grade • Reversals are “normal” in first grade but I often underline them on their papers. You are free to have them “fix them” at home but they do not need to be returned. • Room ParentIf you are interested in being our Room Parent, please let me know.

  23. ABC’s of First Grade • Science Please see yearly calendar for our scientific journey. • Social Studies Holidays around the World Maps – my address, city and state TCI – books on their desks Junior Achievement • Spelling Signs for Sounds groups to begin soon! Please see our weekly spelling lists. Tests will be given each Friday.

  24. ABC’s of First Grade • Bringing toys to school is not permitted for a number of reasons. If a toy is accidentally lost or broken, feelings will be hurt. Toys also become very distracting and do interfere with learning.

  25. ABC’s of First Grade • UniqueEach child and family is unique and special and we would love to hear about your family traditions or cultural customs and/or holidays. • Volunteers needed! Please sign-up on the clipboard.

You are welcome to send workbooks that you feel are appropriate. • Younger SiblingsIt is in your child’s and the program’s best interest to have our parent volunteers available without younger children. This not only allows your full attention to be focused on the class, but also allows for some special time between you and child. Thank you for making childcare arrangements for younger siblings.
