  2. Matthew Effect • Good readers gain an increasingly stronger language base with which to be even more successful readers. • If a student fails to become a proficient reader by third grade, he is going to struggle when he has to start to read to learn in 4th grade.

  4. Identification: The Basics • Words consist of sounds • Problems with voiced and unvoiced consonants • Voiced /v/ and unvoiced /f/ - safe/save; leaf/leave • Voiced /b/ and unvoiced /p/ - cob/cop; bent/pent THERE ARE RULES!

  5. Literal versus figurative language • Difficulty with multiple-meaning words • Word Retrieval • Summarizing, synthesizing, and paraphrasing
