Full Service Community School District • Create a district that fosters community schools • Implications for Facilities Department: • Consider the full spectrum of community facilities and support opportunities for joint-use and educational partnerships • Provide these services as a sustainable community benefit: limit greenhouse gas emissions, optimize construction and life cycle costs, and encourage walking and bicycling

Sustainability Coordinator • In 2011, OUSD intends to establish a Sustainability Coordinator Position: • Improve energy efficiency, track and reduce greenhouse emissions related to energy, and integrate sustainability • Project Management Plan. • Prioritize measures • Develop and implement behavioral supports  institutional change • Green Academy programs. • Integrate school-based initiatives with district goals.

Green Buildings Collaborative for High Performing Schools In 2007, adopted California’s Collaborative for High Performance Schools (“CHPS”) as green building standard for all modernization and new construction. One of ONLY 45 Districts in California (out of 1000+) First district in California to receive State matching grants for verified green school buildings OUSD expects to receive approximately $600,000 in additional State matching grants for CHPS projects in 2010 -2013.

Solar America Showcase The grant has allowed Oakland, Berkeley, and West Contra Costa Unified School Districts to receive up to $500,000 in technical assistance from U.S. Department of Energy to conduct comprehensive solar generation analyses of district schools and facilities and to develop Solar Master Plans for each District.

Expected Results:Solar America Study Installing photovoltaic systems designed to produce 75% of consumption (thus “zeroing out” a building’s electricity expense), is estimated to produce: • Annual savings: $2,868,123 • Annual electricity production: 15,095,386 kWh • Annual greenhouse gases avoided: 3,834 metric tons • Annual Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) earned: 15,095

U.S. EPA Portfolio Manager • Industry standard for tracking a building’s energy usage • Track total utility-based greenhouse gas emissions • Track multiple energy and water meters for each facility • Benchmark facilities relative to their past performance • Monitor energy costs • Share building data with others inside or outside of organization

  13. OUSD Greenhouse Gas Footprint Solar America Study allowed us to benchmark energy usage in all buildings, and calculate our greenhouse gas footprint: Gas 6,107 metric tons of CO2 Electric 4,826 Metric tons of CO2 Total 10,933 metric tons of CO2 Knowledge is power: what to do next?

  14. Current OUSD Energy Projects Working with local utility: • 3 High Schools in 2011 • Retro-commissioning measures and verifications • 595,000 ft2

  15. Energy and Water Conservation Energy Usage: All new construction emphasizes low energy and efficiency. Minimum of 40 points in the CHPS scorecard New classrooms are built without air conditioning as standard. Water Conservation: On-site retention of storm water in all new projects. Re-use of stored storm water for irrigation where feasible.

Nutrition Services Master Plan Nutrition services is rolling out a master plan for the following initiatives and goals: Develop and utilize a sustainable local food system Expand composting and waste diversion in Nutrition Services Model and utilize urban agriculture Promote healthy consumption

Sustainable Custodial Practices Recycling Waste Diversion • 41% waste in 2010 • 44% waste in 2011 Savings • ~ $50,000 per month district-wide in 2010 • Calculation is pending for 2011 • 50% recycling – could save an additional $20,000/month • 24 of 91 sites hae organic waste accounts in 2010; 32 sites added in 2011 Green Gloves summit • All custodial staff • Seminar on successful green cleaning programs, including one within Oakland • First summit - October 8, 2010; next summit January 2012
