  1. Check In Question What caste would your family PROBABLY be in if you were in India (aka: current family & occupations, but native born Indians). How do you know?

  2. India Background • Britain’s economic interest began in the 1600’s • 1700’s: Mughal (Muslim) Empire collapsing and fighting between Muslims & Hindus increasing • British East India company ruled with economic imperialism

  3. Jewel of the Crown • Rich in natural resources (tea, indigo, coffee, cotton, opium) • Large market of consumers (300 million people!) • BEIC made it illegal for India to produce finished goods • Only raw materials for British use • Must purchase finished products from Britain only!!!

  4. CASH CROPS

  5. Credit: Iherzi Class Discussion • British East India Company worker • Muslim Sepoy • Hindu Sepoy ***Sepoy: native Indians who worked as soldiers for the British East India Company

  6. Credit: Iherzi Scenario #1 Christian missionaries arrive. They want to set up schools and preach their religion to the Indian people. They believe that the caste system is wrong and that both Hinduism and Islam are evil. This follows suit with the racist attitudes of most British officials. What will you do??? British: Will you allow them to set up schools and preach Christianity? Sepoys: How will you react? Consider the conflicts this could create.

  7. For Real… • Christian missionaries came to India to spread their religion • BEIC members not concerned with social/religious customs • Both Hindus and Muslims were offended & didn’t convert or listen to them

  8. Credit: Iherzi Scenario #2 Rumor has spread that the cartridges for the Sepoy rifles are sealed with beef and pork fat. In order to use the cartridges, you must bite off the seal. British: How will you quell this rumor? Sepoys: How will you react to this rumor?

  9. For Real… • 1857: Gossip spreads that sepoy’s new rifles are greased with beef and pork fat • 85-90% of sepoys refused the cartridges (aka: refused to do their job) • British jailed soldiers who disobeyed

  10. Credit: Iherzi Scenario #3 Rumors of what happened to the sepoys who refused the cartridges spread around India rapidly. Sepoys all over India are rebelling and marching to the capital in Delhi to protest British rule. It looks as if a war could break out. All: What will you do? Can this conflict be prevented? How would a potential war impact your life?

  11. For Real… • Rebellion started in Dehli and spread to northern and central India • Became known as the SepoyMutiny—intense slaughter

  12. Credit: Iherzi Scenario #4 Additional British troops have arrived to assist the BEIC. The sepoys continue to fight, but there are arguments between the Hindus and Muslims. If the British are pushed out of India, who will take charge? If the Hindus and Muslims cannot unite they will likely be defeated by the British. What do you think your group should do? Why?

  13. For Real… • Hindus and Muslims couldn’t unite • Sikhs remained loyal to the British army • Peaceful religious group native to India; reject discrimination on the basis of caste, gender, etc. • British regained control (took 1 year)

  14. Credit: Iherzi Scenario #5 Although the BEIC was able to quell the mutiny, the British government is unhappy with them. As a result, the British government takes control over India. Local Indian princes still remain in control, but the British are pulling the strings. The British take on harsh attitudes toward Muslims and Hindus as a result of the rebellion. Some believe the two groups need to unite and modify their beliefs and practices, while others believe this may just cause the British to take firmer control over the country. What will you do?

  15. For Real… • 1858: British government takes control of India (Raj) • Gained greater control of free states and placed British governor-general in India • Ram Mohun Roy began campaign advocating that India move themselves away from some of their traditional practices (i.e.: caste system)

  16. Credit: Iherzi Scenario #6 Roy’s ideas and teachings have spread throughout India. People are tired of being treated as second class citizens under the Raj. Indians are not allowed to hold high up government positions and are constantly discriminated against by the British. For example, a British engineer makes 20x as much as an India engineer with the same job & level of education. Many people are calling for the creation of an organization to resist British imperialism. What should you do? Who should be allowed to be in this organization and how should it work?

  17. For Real… • 1885: Indian National Congress created • 1906: Muslim League created • Both groups wanted independence from British rule, but there was still conflict between the two
