  6. THE STUDENT IS… …the most important person on the campus. Without students there would be no need for the institution. …not a cold, enrollment statistic, but feelings and emotions like our own. …not someone to be tolerated so we can do our thing. They are our thing.

  7. THE STUDENT IS… …not dependent on us. Rather, we are dependent on them. …not an interruption of our work, but the purpose of it. We are not doing them a favor by serving them. They are doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so.

  12. EFFECTIVE BOARDS • Know the vision, mission, purpose and values of the college • Approve goals and objectives or strategic plan • Select and retain the best president • Do not conduct “private meetings”

  13. EFFECTIVE BOARDS • Govern through policies and procedures • Approve the budget • Evaluate the board, the president and the college performance fairly and effectively • Oversee financial resources

  14. EFFECTIVE BOARDS • Oversee purchasing, construction and facilities • Keep members informed – no surprises • Understand and accept its role in positive support of the college • Honor chain of command

  19. EFFECTIVE MEMBERS Know there is only one person responsible to the Board Abstain from encouraging faculty/staff gripes Avoid conducting personal investigations Refrain from saying “I will handle that for you”
