  2. Objective: The student will find surface area of cubes and rectangular prisms.

  3. Vocabulary • Total Surface Area is the sum of the areas of all faces and bases of a three dimensional figure. • Lateral Surface Area is the sum of the areas of all the faces of a three dimensional figure, NOT including bases.

  4. Variables S: Surface Area P: Perimeter of the base B: Area of the base h: height s: side

  5. Formula for Cube The totalsurface area S of a cube is six times the side ssquared. S = 6s²

  6. Formula for Rectangular Prism The total surface area S of a prism is twice the area of the base B, plus the lateral area: the perimeter of the base P times the height h. S = 2B + Ph

  7. Formula for Rectangular Prism The lateralsurface area S of a prism is the perimeter of the base P times the height h. S = Ph

  8. A square prism has side lengths of 4 meters. What is the total surface area?

  9. A box is 18 in by 16 in by 10 in. Find the total surface area.

  10. Find the lateral surface area of a rectangular prism with a height of 15 meters and sides lengths of 14 and 13 meters.

  11. A square box has side lengths of 6.2 cm. Find the total surface area of the box.

  12. John has made a sand box for his son to play in. The side lengths are 6 feet by 8 feet and the height is 2 feet. What would be the surface area of this sand box?

  13. Henry wants to paint the ceiling and walls of his living room. One gallon of paint covers 450 ft². The room is 24 ft by 18 ft, and the walls are 9 ft high. How many full gallons of paint will Henry need to paint his living room?
