  2. SEfL Initiative:A work-based learning and internship preparation strategy integrating literacy and 21st Century Skills

  3. Today’s Workshop Goals • Share SEfLvision and theory • Provide materials and tools • Lessons from the Field: SFUSD adoption of SEfL as internship preparation

  4. Social Enterprises for Learning (SEfL) • STC/WBL/CTE strategy, developed in 1998 • Three main outcomes: • Social: provide benefits to a larger community or general public • Enterprise: produce goods or services for clients or customers • Learning:enable participants to develop specified kinds of knowledge and skills • Applicable to a range of career themes and contexts

  5. Why SEfL? • SEfL Projects are authentic, inquiry-based learning opportunities • Initiatives provide important professional/career context and give a professional trajectory to high school students • Academy students are too often not prepared to take full advantage of internships as they are not prepared

  6. SFUSD: SEfL as Internship Preparation • Get inspired – develop relationships, share resources! • Visioning, developing and improving enterprise project ideas • Working with clients • Knowledge into Action!
