    2. The Origin of the Atom The word "atom" comes from the Greek "a-tomos" which means "indivisible- Democritus believed all matter was made up of solid, unbreakable spheres Indian philosophy also attested that all matter was made up of indestructible atoms, a concept put forth by the Vaiseshika doctrine

    3. The first Chemists The Middle Ages (1700s) brought the science/art of alchemy, a practice that sought to transmute non-precious metals into precious ones. The many experiments performed to this end, were the precursors of chemistry

    4. Dalton 1803- published Daltons Atomic Theory, which is almost accurate, even to this day -researched color blindness- used to be known as Daltonism -english school teacher -can tell time since still no photographs-researched color blindness- used to be known as Daltonism -english school teacher -can tell time since still no photographs

    8. The periodic table In 1869, Mendeleev, a Russian scientist constructed a table of the elements according the their chemical properties the precursor to the periodic table. -heavily involved in politics- science advisor to the Czar-heavily involved in politics- science advisor to the Czar

    9. J.J. Thomson 1897- performs experiments using a cathode ray tube

    13. Ernest Rutherford Father of nuclear physics -grad student of Thomson -1908 won chemistry Nobel Prize along with Soddy from McGill showing that substances can transmute through radioactive decay-grad student of Thomson -1908 won chemistry Nobel Prize along with Soddy from McGill showing that substances can transmute through radioactive decay

    18. Niels Bohrs Conclusions Concluded that electrons revolve around nucleus in distinct orbits- NOT randomly. -discovered at the young age of 28 -brilliant physicist- only Dane to win Nobel prize -funny examination anecdote-discovered at the young age of 28 -brilliant physicist- only Dane to win Nobel prize -funny examination anecdote

    20. Chadwick 1935- proves the existence of neutral neutrons alongside protons in the nucleus -also won the Nobel chemistry prize-also won the Nobel chemistry prize
