  7. Context Clues Then, while resting on the bench, Hyman collapsed and died. No one knows why she had suddenly fallen to the floor. Doctors later examined her body to try to explain the cause of her death. They learned that Hyman has a physical condition called Marfan syndrome, yet she never knew she had it.

Parts of Words • Prefixes and suffixes can help you figure out the meaning of words you don’t know. • Root words, such as geo or bio, can also help you determine what a word means. • Example: unhealthy—the prefix un- means “not or opposite of”; therefore, unhealthy means “not healthy” extremely—the suffix –ly means “in a _____ way”; therefore, extremely means “in an extreme way” minimum—the root word –min- means “small or less”; other words with this same root word are minute, minor, minus, miniature

  11. W I N • The energy you get from food is measured in calories. When Carl Lewis was in college, he skipped meals during the day. Then he wouldrun out of energy. This prompted Carl to thinkabout nutrition. He began to eat more during the day to give his body the calories he needed to keep his energy up. • Carl Lewis learned he must eat regularly to get energy.
