The Blueprint • The Blueprint for Government Schools outlines the Governments agenda to deliver quality outcomes for all students in Government schools • The Blueprint identifies 7 Flagship Strategies the first being Student Learning which comprises 5 complementary elements: VELS, Curriculum Planning Guidelines, Assessment and Reporting, Knowledge Bank and PoLT • The Principles of Learning and Teaching supports the implementation of pedagogical change and offers schools a means to examine teaching practice and share innovation

  3. Principles of Learning and Teaching • The learning environment is supportive and productive. • 2. The learning environment promotes independence, interdependence and self motivation. • 3. Students’ needs backgrounds, perspectives and interests are reflected in the learning program. • 4. Students are challenged and supported to develop deep levels of thinking and application. • 5. Assessment practices are an integral part of teaching and learning. • 6. Learning connects strongly with communities and practice beyond the classroom.

  6. What is PoLT? • We all do PoLT even if we are not aware of it, it essentially great teaching • PoLT has put a structure to the essential components of ‘best teaching practice’ • PoLT is not a judgement • PoLT is not used for your PRP • PoLT is a way for you to reflect on your pedagogical practice • Allows us to develop trust within each other as teachers and professionals

Component Mapping • Is a discussion with another teacher which follows an interview process – it takes about 45 minutes • Allows teachers to reflect on their practice and identify an area of need • Encourages reflective practice • Is an on going process • Changes as you and your classroom change

  8. 4th hour of APT • Starting term 2 our 4th hour of APT will be used for you to start your Action Research projects • Contemporary research shows that the most effective teacher PD is on site, on going and intrinsically driven • Enables us to share our best teaching practice with each other

Process • Component Mapping – to identify your area of interest • Action Plan – to be completed by you with your mentor to develop a step by step process for your action research • You have term 2 to investigate, plan, evaluate and revise your area of need • We will then share our learning at the end of the term • Work smarter not harder! – this is not an add on, if you are already undertaking a project you can continue with this eg: Multiliteracies, digital portfolios or working with Jeni Wilson

Action Plan • Will be documented in a folder handed out to you in term 2 • Could involve • Watching demonstration lessons • Working with groups of children eg: digital portfolios • Implementing your work eg: student led conferences (putting together a resource kit for other teachers) • Modelling lessons for others • Discussions with your mentor on the next step to take

  11. I still don’t get it? An example of an Action Research could be: • After the PoLT interview you have identified principle – eg: ICT in the classroom • You then fill out an Action Plan sheet • In this sheet you include the principle you want to improve on and the steps you are going to take eg: improved use of ICT in the literacy block • Then you use your 4th hour of APT to: • maybe watch Laban or another member of your teaching team model a best practice literacy block including ICT • Investigate new types of literacy ICT games • Document the learning of a small group of students before you started and after • Plan lessons which involve the use of ICT in your literacy block (the idea is to use the 4th hour to improve the principle you identified in the PoLT survey) • Discussions with your mentor on the process • At the end of the term everything you have done to improve teaching of ICT in the literacy block is written down in your Action Plan and then you reflect and evaluate the changes using the pro-forma in the kit given out to you at the beginning of term 2

  12. What next?? • Improved teacher practice • Improved student outcomes
