  1. Plans for S2 inspiral analyses LSC Inspiral Analysis Group June 27. 2003 Circulation restricted to LIGO-I members

  2. IUL Group S2 Science Goal #1 • Binary Neutron Star Search • upper limit on the rate of binary neutron star inspirals in the universe with target population to include Andromeda unless we see something • Anticipated results • Assume weak detection from Andromeda • Efficiency ~ 0.2 and T~800 • R~25 /yr /MWEG • (S1: 170 /yt/MWEG) LIGO Scientific Collaboration - IUL Group

  3. IUL Group S2 Science Goal #1 • Improvements over S1 analysis • Data Quality cuts up front • H1-H2, H1-L1, H2-L1 & H1-H2-L1 coincidence • Improved veto studies (safety tests helped by many hardware injections) • New features • New chi-squared tests • Improved PSD estimators (use median and better averaging) • Use hierarchical pipeline: • Trigger in L1 at S/N = rL1 • This corresponds to a S/N in H1 of rH1 • And a S/N in H2 of rH2 • rH1 = (sigmaH1/sigmaL1)*rL1 ~ 0.45*rL1 (using SenseMon ranges) • Depending on threshold cuts for each IFO we will have double or triple coincidence  coherent analysis LIGO Scientific Collaboration - IUL Group

  4. IUL Group S2 Science Goal #2 • Non-spinning binary black hole (BBH) search • Undecided what the scientific paper at the end will be: null result or rate upper limit. • Anticipated max. distance to optimally oriented binary is up to 7Mpc at ~20 Msun assuming standard post-Newtonian waveforms • New aspects of this search • Uncertainty in waveforms mean looser chi-squared cuts • Use detection template family • must Monte-Carlo efficiency to all known model waveforms (costly) • Instrumental vetoes and coincidence far more important • Will add coincidence with a burst and ringdown search after end of inspiral search • Anticipated results: • First search (event candidate, if we got extremely lucky) for BBH inspiral LIGO Scientific Collaboration - IUL Group

  5. Binary Black Hole Range Effective One Body Standard post-Newt LIGO Scientific Collaboration - IUL Group

  6. IUL Group S2 Science Goal #3 • Search for low-mass BBH mergers in Halo • i.e. MACHO binary search • Search will follow binary neutron star pipeline • Only new aspect of search will be population model • Large uncertainties in mass distributions • Probably insensitive to spatial distribution • Anticipated results: • High efficiency, T~800 hrs  R ~ few a year LIGO Scientific Collaboration - IUL Group

  7. Template Bank Search: Report by July 1. (Duncan, Patrick B.) Data Quality: Use what's available on July 1. (Peter S. and Gaby) Veto Studies: First report by July 1. Tabulate, but also worry about how to integrate this information automatically into pipeline (Yunyong, Weili, Brian, Nelson, Natalia). Template Search Validation: Report July 15th (Stas+) Coherent Code: Report July 15th (_____) Beta Pipeline: Report July 15th. (Patrick) Time of Arrival template Chisq: Report July 15th. (Valera) Spin Statistics for BH-X binaries: Report July 15th (Philippe,Vicky) Report on Burst/Inspiral trigger coincidence, July 22nd (Saikat,Warren) Face to Face: LLO July 25th. Review initial pipeline output. (All) Task list and schedule LIGO Scientific Collaboration - IUL Group
