    1. Bani Dahir Mosque Weapons Cache 29 DEC 05

    2. The following cache is small in terms of quantity; however, it had the potential to be extremely lethal. Taking these caches away from insurgents degrades their ability to attack Iraqi civilians and Iraqi and U.S. Forces. The cache was found Dec. 29 at a mosque near Haditha by Iraqi soldiers from 2nd Bn, 2nd Brigade, 7th Iraqi Army Division and US Marines from 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. Al Anbar is the 2d Marine Divisions Area of Operations. Currently there are two Iraqi Army Divisions forming and training alongside 2d MarDivs Sailors, Soldiers and Marines. The 2d MarDivs philosophy is to train, integrate and operate with our Iraqi Army counterparts in order to allow them to take up the fight against the insurgents who are trying to stop progress in Iraq.

    3. A mortar fin was seen by Iraqi Army soldiers and US Marines while conducting clearing operations in Bani Dahir, near Haditha. This discovery gave the Iraqis and Marines cause to sweep the area with metal detectors.

    4. View from mosque courtyard.

    5. After the metal detector went off, Iraqi soldiers and US Marines discovered a wooden crate shallowly buried inside the compound of a local mosque.

    6. First look into wooden crate: It doesnt look like much, miscellaneous trash.

    7. Marines from 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment begin removing the contents of the crate.

    8. The first item of interest discovered is an RPG Launcher wrapped in canvas blanket covered in grease

    9. The RPG launcher (slide #8) along with propellant and warheads.

    10. Items found in wooden crate

    11. More items found in wooden crate

    12. All items in wooden crate

    13. While the Marines were searching the wooden crate, metal detectors discovered a second cache in the mosques courtyard.

    14. Radios and cordless phones & base stations are all used as part of remote detonation devices for improvised bombs.

    15. Antennas and wires are used to rig these homemade bombs while the propane tank filled with explosives and/or mortar rounds are typically buried in the street.
