  2. The Film • We love our cell phones, and the selection between different models has never been bigger. But the production of phones has a dark, bloody side. • The main part of minerals used to produce cell phones are coming from the mines in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DCR). • The western world is buying these so-called conflict minerals and thereby finances a civil war that, according to human rights organizations, has been the bloodiest conflict since the Second World War.

  3. The Film • The documentary Blood in the Mobile shows the connection between our phones and the civil war in the Congo. Director Frank Poulsen travels to the Democratic Republic of Congo to see the illegal mine industry with his own eyes. • Blood in Mobile is a film about our responsibility for the conflict in the Congo and about corporate social responsibility.

Questions to Think About • How does the film deal with issues of freedom, equality, human dignity, and individual and collective rights and responsibilities? • Germany seems to have the right technology to trace the origin of materials to the country based on molecular composition. What are other solutions that can help companies become more socially responsible? • Do you think companies should be allowed to continue to make cell phones the way they do, even when there are solutions out there? Profits are important for companies, but why have a department for social responsible when it does not work in its full capacity? How accountable are companies, and where do business ethics come into play?

CORPORATE LETTER WRITING • You will write a letter to the CEO of a company since many non-governmental organizations in the film stated that consumer demand for change was the best way to make the changes needed for the DRC. • In your letter to the CEO, you will: • Outline the problem in the Democratic Republic of Congo • State their social responsibility statement • Address the solutions for your specific company using your new knowledge of the connection between ethics and business operations(at least 3 areas in ethics) .
