  1. CEE398 (KUC) Spring04 InstrumentationsHollow Cylinder Tensile Tester Jerry Kim Graduate Research Assistant In Transportation Facility Division

  2. Asphalt As an Engineering Material • Widely used in paving industry: • as binding agent to form asphalt concrete • Wide variety in material properties: • Viscous, Visco-plastic, Visco-elastic, elastic depending on temperatures • Difficult to test in compression mode: • indirect tension testing has been used

  3. HCT (Hollow Cylinder Tensile Tester) Intensifier Hydraulic Loading Unit Hydraulic Control Unit Cooling Unit

  4. Pure Tensile Stress Induced Applied Internal Pressure How does it work?

  5. What it can do? • Creep (constant loading) test • D(t) = (induced strain)/(applied stress)

  6. What it can do? • Dynamic Modulus (E*) test • E* = (amplitude of stress)/(amplitude of strain)

  7. What it can do? • Strength test

  8. Special Features • Two-way strain measurements a) Strain gages b) Volumetric strain measurement • Wide range of materials can be tested - Asphalt binder, asphalt mastic, asphalt concrete, and even PC concrete

  9. Advantages • Possibly portable • Relatively inexpensive • Eventually, no needs for strain gages • Ideal for full characterization of composite materials which varies its properties depending on the proportions of individual constituents.
