  1. Breakout Group 4: Programmatic Strategy Organize a NASA “constituency” to advocate for Great Lakes science needs A consistent voice to influence NASA decision-making (mission requirements, etc.) Sustained effort – identify short-term & long-term strategies

  2. Elements of the Strategy • Theme meetings/workshops: • Physics, hydrology, etc. (this meeting) • Biology, WQ, etc.(2011? Bontempi) • Watersheds, LULC, carbon cycle, etc. • White papers, peer reviewed papers from each of above groups • Web presence • Infiltration! (see next slide)

  3. Making our voice heard • NASA Science teams for measurements • Vector winds (May 2010, Barcelona) • Surface topography (Oct 2010, Lisbon) • SST (Nov 2010, Seattle) • Ocean color (soon?) • Precipitation (?) • Decadal missions within NASA • Science Definition teams, workshops, etc. • Programs, campaigns, etc. outside NASA • EPA Great Lakes intensive years • Other NOAA, USGS, etc.

  4. Conclusions • Focus on physics, biology/WQ, watersheds • Establish priorities, widely agreed upon. • Choose a few things to really push on the next year or two. • Ensure coordination, mutual support • Establish an informal steering mechanism for NASA Great Lakes • Organize sustained, decadal-scale effort • Implementation plan • Input to Science Teams, Decadal Survey mission
