Twelve Symbolic Animals • It is traditional in China, when a person is born, one animal (shuxiang) is used to symbolize this year. • Shuxiang, aslo called shengxiao (any of the 12 animals representing the Earthly Branches), is a traditional way in China to number the years and to record a person’s age.

So we round the month to be either 29 days or 30 days. • Again, in the Chinese a month is simply a 'Moon.' • The English word "month" is derived from the word "moon."

  21. Chinese Lunar Calendar • A normal year has 12 lunar months, with the length of lunar month defined above. In order to make up to 365.24 days, an extra month is added during the Leap Year （闰年）.

Thus, we are in Year 2010 and Year 4707 respectively.
