  1. Space Exploration By: Courtney Robertson

  2. Space exploration • Space exploration is the discovery and exploration of outer space by means of space technology.

  3. Facts about space exploration • It’s about $10,000 to put a pound of anything into a near-earth orbit. • It costs $500 to $700 million every time a shuttle flies. • The space station cost around $100 billion.

  4. How much money do we spend on space exploration? • World hunger can be ended for $30 billion per year. • If the approximate amount of money ever used by NASA (roughly $780 billion) was used to fight world hunger, no one in the world would be hungry for 26 years

  5. Is it worth the money? • “No, the amount of money being spent on space research is in the billions and it has achieved extraordinarily little except for a bit of improved technology which would probably have come about anyway by other means” • - Robin Hanbury (Author, explorer and campaigner)

  6. NASA • Does NASA really need all the money that they are given? • NASA has the ability to complete project much quicker and cheaper than they do. • “If I had someone come to me and say they wanted to spend well over a hundred billion dollars when they knew the task could be done more quickly and less expensively, I'd say, 'You're fired.‘” • -Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), senior member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology

  7. What have we gotten out of it? • For the money being spent, the USA has not achieved any major scientific breakthroughs. • The USA has spent more money than any country on space exploration, but we have nothing more to show for it.

  8. Statistics

  9. Is it worth the risk? • We may find something harmful in space. • (Harmful bacteria/microorganisms) • Astronauts risk their lives going into space. • Exploring space has caused a war fro the US. It is worth going to war with another country?

  10. Challenger Explosion • The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986 • The Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all 7 crew members.

  11. Columbia Disaster • The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster occurred on February 1, 2003 • Columbia disintegrated, killing all 7 of its crew members.
